국문 초록

이 글에서 나는 ethnomethodology가 어떻게 창시되었는지 그 발생원류까지 거슬러 올라가서 그 의미를 탐구하고자 하였다. 이 작업을 통해서 먼저 나는 ethnomethodology의 창시자인 가핑클(Garfinkel)이 'ethno' 및 'methodology'를 어떻게 개념 정의하였으며 더불어 그의 ethnomethodology(EM)에 대한 관점으로부터 우리가 얻을 수 있는 함의가 무엇인지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 두 번째, 나는 가핑클이 EM이라는 이른바 '새로운 사회학'을 창시함으로써 연구대상으로 삼고자 하였던 '사회현상'은 무엇이었는지를 탐색하고자 하였다. 세 번째, 나는 가핑클의 소설 <컬러 트러블(Color trouble)>과 그가 연구대상으로 삼고자 하였던 현상(예컨대 배심원의 평결)을 음미함으로써 EM을 현대에서 어떻게 확장시키고 발전시킬 수 있을 것인가를 모색하였다. 네 번째, 나는 ethno와 method가 무엇인지 각각의 의미를 밝히기 위하여 내가 경험한 몇 가지 구체적 일상을 분석하였다. 이러한 작업의 결과 나는 EM의 관점의 핵심은 나를 포함해서 내 주위 사람들이 어떻게 일상에서 '사람들의 방법'을 실천하고 살아가고 있는지를 밝히는 것에 있다는 것을 발견하였다. 그리고 나는 EM의 본질은 탐구하는 것을 통해서 그것이 우리 주위에 흔하디 흔한 당연한 일상을 의심하는 것으로부터 출발하여 그 당연한 일상의 배경이 되는 '사람들의 방법'을 해독하고 나아가서는 새로운 일상을 창조하는데 도움이 되는 실천적인 학문이라는 생각에 이르게 되었다. 마지막으로 이러한 EM의 발상을 갖고 교실의 일상을 볼 때 교실이 어떻게 새롭게 보이는지를 탐구하고, 그 새롭게 보이는 교실의 모습을 토대로 교실연구자와 더불어 현장교사가 무엇을 할 수 있는지를 모색하였다. My research aims to inquire into how ethnomethodology came about and trace it back to its origin to articulate why we should doubt things we regard as taken-for-granted. In this work, firstly, I attempted to know how Harold Garfinkel, who coined the term ethnomethodology, defined 'ethno', and 'methodology', and what the implications of his perspective are to us. Secondly, I attempted to find out what is the 'social phenomenon' is that Garfinkel wanted to be the target of his research when he created this new branch of sociology. Thirdly, I attempted to figure out how ethnomethodology could be extended and furthered by considering which is a novel and the phenomenon (e.g., jury deliberation etc.) that was the subject of his study. Fourthly, I analyzed a couple of my concrete daily routines to articulate what 'ethno' and 'method' mean respectively. In this work, I came to realize that the core of ethnomethodology's perspective is to clarify how people around me, including myself practise 'ethno-method' in their daily routines. After inquiring into the nature of ethnomethodology, I came to find the fact that ethnomethodology is a kind of practical academy, the starting point of which is to cast doubt on daily routines that commonly happen around us, to decode Ethno-method on which daily routines are based, and to help creat new daily routines. Finally, when I watched the daily routines at classroom with the idea of ethnomethodology, I inquired into how newly classroom emerges to us, and examined what the school teacher along with the researcher on education can do on the basis of the new face of classroom.
