2022년 안데르센상 수상자인 이수지의 그림책 데뷔작인 『Alice in Wonderland, 2002』(이하, 이수지의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』)는 2002년 Corraini 출판사에 의해 출간되었다. 이 책에서 이수지는 미술사, 특히 이탈리아 르네상스 회화 작품들을 인용하는데, 이 그림들의 공통점은 모두 미술사에서 가장 중요한 주제인 ‘재현’과 ‘환영’을 다루고 있다는 점이다. 이수지의 『이상한 나라의 앨리스』에서 사진과 그림, 원근법과 거울상, 환영과 재현 등은 모두 작가 자신이 정교하게 짜놓은 틀이다. 이러한 틀을 통해 나타나는 앨리스의 모험은 그 줄거리와는 별개로 독자들에게 이것은 사진일 뿐이고, 극장일 뿐이며, 거울이고, 종이 인형이고, 원근법이고 눈속임일 뿐이라고 거듭해서 말한다. 그러나 책을 펼치면, 독자는 언제나 이러한 모든 장치가 제공하는 환영의 세계에 빠져들어 앨리스의 이야기를 따라가게 된다. 이 연구는 바로 그러한 환영과 재현의 문제, 그리고 몰입의 행위 자체가 이 그림책의 가장 주요한 서사이며 작가의 의도라는 것을 포토몽타주의 원본이 되었던 작품들을 중심으로 분석하고 있다.

영문 초록

2022 Hans Christian Andersen Award winner Suzy Lee’s debut as a picture book artist, Alice in Wonderland, was published in 2002 by Edizioni Corraini. In this book, the artist made use of citations from art history, especially from the paintings of the Italian Renaissance. These works all share something in common - they deal with the issue of “representation” and “illusion” - one of the most significant topics in the history of art. In Suzy Lee’s Alice, the photographs to paintings, perspective and mirror images, illusions and representations are all deliberately constructed frameworks of the artist. Those frameworks reveal different tools in every spread, repeatedly saying to the reader that it is only a photograph, a theater, a mirror, a paper doll, a perspective, and an optical illusion. However, as soon as the book is opened, readers are always ready to be drawn into the world of illusion, provided by all kinds of props. This paper analyzed those cited works and found sees that the author’s intention and the main narrative of this picturebook is the question of the illusion and the representation of the real and the act of immersion in the work of art.
