영문 초록

This study examined the difference between emotional invalidation in the West and in Korea, by examining how Korean children perceive and experience being emotionally invalidated by their parents. And we wanted to understand the response evoked in children as a result of emotional invalidation. Interviews were conducted with 20 children in the 4th to 6th grades in elementary school. The data were qualitatively analyzed. The results of the study are as follows. First, the study confirmed that the existing theory of emotional invalidation is applicable to Korean children. In addition, coercive and controlling responses and indifferent responses, which were not confirmed in the existing theory, were additionally discovered. Second, it confirmed that even if parents had good strategies and intentions, if they emotionally invalidated their child, it would affect the child’s emotional development negatively. Third, even if children had a negative experience of emotional invalidation, they were aware of the empathy and support they wanted from their parents.
