노인요양시설 여성 노인의 시간은 어떻게 흐를까?

국문 초록

우리의 인생은 유한하기에, 삶의 후반부를 살아가는 노인들의 시간 체험은 인간 존재의 근원을 탐구하는 데에 있어 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 특히 평생 누군가의 딸, 아내, 며느리이자 어머니로서의 정체성을 실천하며 살았던 이들이 노인요양시설에서 생을 마무리하면서 총체적으로 시간 체험을 한 바는, 한국 문화의 맥락에 근거해 여성 노인세대의 삶을 깊이 있게 이해하도록 도움은 물론 노인요양시설 이용자를 위한 섬세한 지원 토대로서도 많은 사회복지적 함의가 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 노인요양시설 여성 노인의 시간 체험을 심도 있게 논의하고자 현상학적 접근을 수행했다. 연구를 위해 총 7명의 연구참여자와 개별 면담하여 자료를 수집했고, 이를 van Kaam(1987)이 제시한 심리현상학적 방법에 따라 면밀하게 분석했다. 자료분석 결과, 총 52개의 부주제 및 17개의 주제가 도출되었다. 이것들을 다시 총 6개의 범주로 유목화했으며, 그 내용은 ‘누워서 반추하는 계집이었던 시절’, ‘찰나를 파고드는 나 죽을 미래’, ‘단순해진 하루들’, ‘작지만 기쁜 순간들’, ‘남이 돌봐주어 지내는 요즘’, ‘짐이 되어 죄스러운 나이’와 같았다. 또한, 최종적으로 연구참여자들의 시간 체험에 관한 본질적 의미는 ‘성 역할 줄어든 뒤안길에서 저물어가는 한평생’임이 드러났다. 마지막으로, 본 연구에서 발견한 점들을 바탕으로 노인요양시설 여성 노인의 복지 향상을 위해 논의 거리를 제안하였다.

영문 초록

Since our lives are finite, the experience of time in older people living through the second half of their lives has important implications for exploring the source of human existence. Especially, the overall experiences of time in those who have lived practicing identities as someone s daughter, wife, daughter-in-law or mother for life, finishing their lives at nursing homes for the elderly not only help for an in-depth understanding of the lives of the elderly women generation based on the context of Korean culture but also become the basis of delicate support for the elderly that use long-term care facilities, which is full of implications in terms of social welfare. Thus, this study made a phenomenological approach to discuss the experience of time in elderly women in nursing homes intensively. For the research, data were gathered through individual interviews with seven participants, and they were minutely analyzed according to the Psychophenomenological method proposed by van Kaam (1987). As a result of an analysis of the data, 52 sub-themes and 17 themes were drawn. These were classified into a total of six categories, and the contents were, ‘the years when I was a woman in a low position, which I recall lying down,’ ‘the future when I die, which is seizing every moment,’ ‘the days that are simplified,’ ‘the moments that are small but happy,’ ‘the present when I live attended by others,’ and ‘the age felt guilty for being a burden.’ Finally, the essential meaning of the participants experience of time was ‘the life ending in the back alley with reduced gender role.’ Lastly, for the improvement of welfare for elderly women in nursing homes, the topics to discuss were proposed based on the findings of this study.
