국문 초록

본 연구는 호프스테드(Hofstede)의 6가지 문화 차원(Six Dimensions of Culture)과 부패인식지수(CPI)를 이용하여 문화적 요인과 부패 간의 관계를 분석하였다. 118개국에 대한 문화 차원 자료는 Culture Factor Group에서 그리고 CPI 자료는 국제투명성기구(Transparency International)에서 수집하였다. 문헌 검토를 통해 6개 가설을 도출하였고 상관분석과 다중회귀분석을 이용하여 변수 간의 관계를 조사하였다. 분석결과에 따르면, 1)권력간격(Power Distance)과 부패 간에는 유의미한 음의 상관관계가 있는데, 이는 권력간격 문화가 강한 사회에서 더 많은 부패가 발생하는 경향이 있음을 의미한다. 2)개인주의(Individualism)와 부패 간에는 강한 양의 상관관계가 있는데, 이는 개인주의가 강한 사회에서는 부패 수준이 낮음을 암시한다. 3)남성적 문화(Masculine Culture)와 부패 간에는 통계적 유의성이 없었다. 4)불확실성 회피(Uncertainty Avoidance)와 부패사이에는 약간의 음의 상관관계가 있으며, 이는 불확실성 회피 문화가 강한 사회에서는 부패 수준이 높음을 시사한다. 5)장기 지향성(Long-term Orientation)과 부패 사이에는 유의미한 양의 관계가 있으며, 이는 장기 지향성 문화가 강한 사회에서는 부패 수준이 낮음을 암시한다. 6)허용적 문화(Indulgence Culture)와 부패 간에는 통계적 유의성이 없었다. 본 연구는 다음과 같은 학문적 의의와 실무적 시사점을 가진다. 학문적 관점에서 보면, 부패의 원인을 법적, 제도적, 경제적 요인뿐만 아니라 문화적 요인까지 확장함으로써 향후 연구자들에게 보다 심층적인 연구를 위한 이론적 토대를 제공한다. 실무적 관점에서는 다국적 기업 경영진들이 반부패 전략 수립에 있어 각국의 문화적 요인을 고려해야 함을 감안했을 때 본 연구결과를 참고 자료로 활용할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examined the relationship between cultural factors and corruption using Hofstede’s six cultural dimensions and Corruption Perception Index (CPI). Cultural dimension data for 118 countries were obtained from the Culture Factor Group located in Helsinki, Finland, and the CPI data from Transparency International. Six hypotheses were derived from a literature review, and the relationship between variables was investigated through correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. According to the analysis results, 1)there is a significant negative correlation between power distance and corruption, indicating more corruption tends to occur in a society with a strong power distance culture. 2)there is a strong positive correlation between individualism and corruption, which means the level of corruption will be low in a strong individualistic society. 3)there is no statistical significance between the masculine culture and corruption. 4)there is a slight negative correlation between uncertainty avoidance and corruption, indicating the level of corruption will be high in a society with a strong uncertainty avoidance culture. 5)there is a significant positive relationship between long-term orientation and corruption, indicating the level of corruption will be low in a society with a strong long-term orientation culture. 6)there is no statistical significance between the indulgence culture and corruption. This study has both academic significance and practical implications. From an academic perspective, it provides a theoretical basis for future researchers by extending the cause of corruption to not only legal, institutional, and economic factors but also cultural factors. From a practical point of view, this result can be used as reference data for multinational corporation executives in developing anti-corruption strategies because cultural factors must be taken into account in addition to the economic, legal, and institutional variables of each country.
