국문 초록

연구목적: 이 연구는 메타버스 환경에서 운영된 말하기 중심 한국어 수업에 참여한 학습자들이 수업을 어떻게 체험하며, 그 체험을 통해 언어 학습과 실천의 의미를 어떤 방식으로 구성하는지를 탐색하는 데 목적이 있다. 연구방법: 세종학당재단이 운영하는 ‘메타버스 세종학당’ 중급 한국어 수업을 사례로 하여, 자발적으로 참여한 다국적 학습자들의 체험을 질적 사례연구 방식으로 분석하였다. 참여 관찰, 심층 면담, 비동시적 인터뷰, 다국어 설문, 학습 산출물 등 다양한 자료를 수집·분석하여 학습 체험을 맥락적으로 해석하였다. 연구결과: 학습자들은 메타버스 수업을 단순한 온라인 플랫폼이 아니라 ‘존재하고 상호작용하는’ 몰입적 학습 공간으로 인식하였다. 기술적 제약과 신체적 부담에도 불구하고, 교사와 동료 학습자와의 정서적 연결과 사회적 상호작용은 학습 지속성과 발화를 가능하게 했다. 언어 실천은 지식 습득이 아니라 관계 속에서 구성되는 살아 있는 사회적 행위로 나타났다. 학술적 기여: 이 연구는 메타버스 기반 한국어 수업을 학습자 체험의 관점에서 조명함으로써, 기술이나 콘텐츠 중심으로 이루어졌던 기존 논의를 보완한다. 또한, 학습자의 몰입과 감정, 상호작용을 실증적으로 분석하여 디지털 시대 언어교육의 실천적 전환을 위한 이론적 기반을 제공했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines how learners in an intermediate-level Korean speaking course experienced language learning as a socially situated, embodied, and relational practice within a metaverse environment. Rather than viewing the metaverse as a neutral platform, the study frames it as an educational world dynamically shaped through interaction, presence, and connection. Based on a qualitative case study of the Metaverse King Sejong Institute, analysis centers on five interrelated dimensions: technology, space, time, embodiment, and social connection. Data sources include participant observation, in-depth and asynchronous interviews, multilingual surveys, and learner-produced artifacts, which were analyzed to explore how emotional, bodily, and social engagements informed learners’ language practices. Findings indicate that learners did not merely attend class; they inhabited and co-constructed an immersive educational space. Despite structural inequalities such as device limitations and unstable connectivity, they sustained participation through avatar-based interaction and peer support. In this context, language learning emerged less as discrete skill acquisition than as a process of living, relating, and expressing through language. By foregrounding learners’ lived experiences and meaning-making, this study offers theoretical and empirical insight into how digital Korean language education can be reconceptualized—not as content delivery, but as embodied and relational practice. It underscores the learner as an active subject whose presence, vulnerability, and connections with others shape the reality of learning in virtual environments.
