국문 초록

본 연구는 대전환기 국면에서 지속가능발전교육(ESD)을 통해 미래 세대의 책임 있는 시민 역량을 함양할 교육적 기회를 탐색한다. 특히 동양 고전 『천자문(千字文)』의 윤리적 가치가 현대 ESD의 핵심 목표인 책임 있는 시민성 함양에 어떻게 기여하는지를 규명한다. 이를 위해 『천자문』 원문과 주석서, 유네스코(UNESCO) ESD 학습목표를 포함한 학술·정책 문헌을 검토하였다. 그 결과, 『천자문』의 인의예지(仁義禮智) 등 보편 윤리가 비판적 사고, 시스템 사고, 통합적 문제해결 등 ESD 핵심 역량과 창의적으로 연결될 수 있음을 확인하였다. 이는 『천자문』의 지혜가 현대 지속가능성 담론과 접속하는 교육적 경로를 제시하며, 전통 지혜의 현대적 재발견이라는 학술적 의의를 갖는다. 궁극적으로 본 연구는 동양 고전 기반 ESD 교육모형에 대한 통찰을 제공하여 기존 연구의 지평을 확장하고, 한국적 맥락에 부합하는 지속가능성 교육의 실질적 정책 함의를 도출한다.

영문 초록

This study explores educational opportunities to cultivate responsible citizenship among future generations through Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) in an era of grand transition. Focusing on the Thousand-Character Classic (Qianziwen), an East Asian classic, it investigates how the text’s embedded ethical values can contribute to ESD’s core objective of fostering responsible citizenship. To this end, the study reviewed the original text and major commentaries alongside academic and policy literature on ESD, including UNESCO’s ESD learning objectives. The analysis indicates that the work’s universal ethics—exemplified by benevolence (仁, ren), righteousness (義, yi), propriety (禮, li), and wisdom (智, zhi)—can be conceptually aligned with key ESD competencies, notably critical thinking, systems thinking, and integrated problem-solving. This alignment suggests actionable pathways through which classical wisdom can interface with contemporary sustainability discourse and underscores the scholarly significance of the modern reinterpretation of tradition. Ultimately, the study offers insights into an instructional model for ESD grounded in East Asian classics, thereby extending the scope of existing research and deriving practical policy implications for contextualizing sustainability education in Korea.
