국문 초록

2025년은 헨리 아펜젤러(1858-1902)와 호러스 언더우드(1859-1916)가 내한한 1885년을 기점으로 한 한국 기독교 140주년이 되는 해이다. 지난 140년 동안 한국교회는 단순한 종교 확산을 넘어 교육, 의료, 사회복지, 민주화, 통일운동 등 한국 사회 근대화 과정에서 결정적 역할을 감당하며 공적 신학의 주체로 자리매김하였다. 20세기 산업화와 사회적 격변 속에서 교회는 부흥운동, 새벽기도, 전도운동 등을 통해 대중 종교로 확산되었고, 세계 선교를 주도하는 “선교 국가”로 도약하였다. 그러나 2010년대 이후 한국교회는 청년 세대의 급격한 이탈, 사회적 신뢰 상실, 전방위적 세속화라는 심각한 위기에 직면하였다. 이러한 위기는 권위주의적 리더십, 구조적 경직성, 문화적 감수성 부족 등 내부적 요인과 결합하여 신학적·교회론적 전환을 요청하고 있다. 본 연구는 한국교회의 역사적 궤적을 성찰하며 세 가지 신학적 질문을 제기한다. 첫째, 한국교회의 폭발적 성장을 가능케 한 신학적·영적 요인은 무엇인가? 둘째, 현재의 성장 정체와 위기는 어떤 교회론적 결핍을 드러내는가? 셋째, 디지털 시대와 세대 전환의 맥락 속에서 교회는 어떻게 복음의 공공성을 구현하고 다음 세대와 소통할 수 있는가? 분석 결과, 한국교회의 성장은 성령의 임재와 선교적 교회론의 구현이라는 신학적 사건으로 해석될 수 있으며, 반대로 정체는 교회의 본질적 사명 상실과 세대 단절에서 비롯된 교회론적 위기로 드러난다. 따라서 미래 교회는 디지털 세대의 감수성을 수용하고, 세대 통합적 리더십을 회복하며, 지역 공동체 중심의 정체성을 재정립해야 한다. 이는 “계승을 통한 갱신”이라는 신학적 비전 아래 전통과 혁신을 통합하는 과정 속에서 가능하다. 궁극적으로 이러한 갱신은 제도 개혁을 넘어 회개와 십자가, 말씀과 기도, 공동체와 섬김이라는 복음의 본질을 회복함으로써, 오순절적 성령 체험과 조직신학적 성찰을 통합하는 새로운 부흥의 여정을 가능하게 한다.

영문 초록

The year 2025 marks the 140th anniversary of Korean Christianity, dating from the arrival of Henry Appenzeller (1858-1902) and Horace Underwood (1859-1916) in 1885. Over the past 140 years, the Korean church has moved beyond the sphere of religious expansion to play a decisive role in education, medical care, social welfare, democratization, and the reunification movement, thereby establishing itself as a public theological agent in the modernization of Korea. During the industrialization and social upheavals of the twentieth century, the church expanded as a mass religion through revival movements, dawn prayer meetings, and evangelistic campaigns, and rose to become a “missionary nation” leading global evangelism. However, since the 2010s the church has faced a severe crisis characterized by the rapid exodus of younger generations, the erosion of social trust, and pervasive secularization. These challenges have been compounded by internal factors such as authoritarian leadership, structural rigidity, and a lack of cultural sensitivity, demanding a theological and ecclesiological reorientation. This study reflects on the historical trajectory of the Korean church by raising three theological questions: first, what theological and spiritual factors enabled its explosive growth? Second, what is the essential nature of its current stagnation and crisis? Third, how can the church embody the gospel’s public relevance and communicate with the next generation in the digital era? The analysis demonstrates that the growth of the Korean church can be interpreted as a theological event rooted in the presence of the Spirit and the embodiment of a missional ecclesiology, while its stagnation is revealed as an ecclesiological crisis stemming from the loss of its essential mission and generational discontinuity. Accordingly, the future church must embrace the sensibilities of the digital generation, recover intergenerational leadership, and re-establish its identity as a Spirit-centered local community. Within the theological vision of “renewal through succession,” the integration of tradition and innovation becomes indispensable. Ultimately, renewal must move beyond institutional reform to a recovery of repentance, the cross, Scripture, prayer, community, and service, so that the church may embark on a new journey of revival through the integration of Pentecostal experience and systematic theological reflection.
