국문 초록

이 논문은 한국 교회가 왜 자유민주주의를 지키려 하는가, 한국에서 자유민주주의를 확립하기 위해 교회는 무엇을 할 수 있는가를 살펴보려고 한다. 한국에서 자유민주주의에 관한 논쟁은 궁극적으로 국가 정체성의 문제로 이어진다. 따라서 국민으로서 기독교인은 어떠한 국가·사회 체제를 선택할 것인가를 심각하게 고민하지 않을 수 없다. 자유민주주의는 기독교에 기초하여 확립되고 발전하였다. 그래서 교회는 자유민주주의에 반대하는 세력과 갈등·대립의 관계에 있다. 한국 현대사에서 한국 교회는 여러 도전 가운데 자유민주주의를 수호하는 역할을 감당하였다. 한국 현대사에서 한국 교회는 개인의 자유와 권리를 존중하지 않는 폭력적이고 자의적인 전체주의적 지배와 독재권력을 거부하였다. 무엇보다도 종교의 자유를 전면적으로 부인하는 무신론에 기반을 둔 이념과 세력에 강력하게 저항하였다. 이는 기독교적 가치를 보존하고 수호하기 위함이었다. 지금까지 한국 교회는 건국세력으로서, 반공·반전체주의 세력으로서, 민주화 기여세력으로서 그리고 문화마르크시즘을 거부하는 시민운동세력으로서 역할을 감당하였다. 특히 오늘날 한국 교회는 생명, 성윤리, 결혼, 가족 등 기독교 가치와 문화를 부정하는 문화마르크시즘에 대하여 민감하게 반응하고 있다. 문화마크르시즘은 궁극적으로 기독교 가치·문화 그리고 이를 바탕으로 하는 사회적 기본질서와 체제의 전복을 추구한다. 기독교에 적의를 가진 문화마르크시즘을 추종하는 세력이 국가권력을 장악하는 경우, 한국 교회는 공격의 주요 대상이 될 것이 분명하다. 그런 까닭에 한국 교회는 이에 대한 싸움을 ‘문화전쟁’, ‘도덕전쟁’, ‘가치전쟁’ 나아가 ‘체제전쟁’으로 간주한다. 이는 정치적 보수와 진보의 싸움이 아니다. 근본적으로는, 기독교와 무신론의 싸움이다. 한국 교회는 대한민국 자유민주체제의 확립을 위한 자신의 역할에 무거운 책임감을 가져야 한다. 먼저, 한국 교회는 종교의 자유를 보호하고 실현하는 장(場)이어야 한다. 또한 도덕적 권위를 통한 정치세력에 대한 견제, 시민운동을 통한 입법과정에의 참여 및 국가정책에 대한 의견 제시, 시민 덕성(civic virtue)을 함양하는 시민교육 등을 담당할 수 있어야 한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to see why the Korean Church tries to protect liberal democracy and what the Church can do to establish it in Korea. The discussion on liberal democracy in Korea ultimately leads to the question of national identity. Therefore, Christians as citizens should seriously worry about what kind of national and social system they choose. Liberal democracy has been established and developed based on Christianity. Therefore, the Church is in a relationship of conflict and confrontation with the forces opposed to liberal democracy. In modern Korean history, the Korean Church played the role of guarding liberal democracy amid various challenges. In modern Korean history, the Korean Church rejected violent and arbitrary totalitarian rule and dictatorial power that did not respect individual freedom and rights. Above all, it strongly resisted the ideas and forces based on atheism that completely denied religious freedom. This was to preserve and protect Christian values. Until now, the Korean Church has played the role of a nation-founding force, an anti-communist and anti-totalitarian force, a force contributing to democratization, and a civic movement force that rejects cultural Marxism. Especially today, the Korean church is sensitive to cultural Marxism, which denies Christian values and culture, such as life, sexual ethics, marriage, and family. Cultural Marxism ultimately seeks the overthrow of Christian values and culture, as well as the basic social order and system based on them. If the political groups that follow cultural Marxism, which are hostile to Christianity, gain political power, it is clear that Korean churches will be the main target of attack. Therefore, Korean churches consider the fight against this to be a “cultural war,” a “moral war,” a “value war,” and even a “system war.” This is not a battle between political conservatives and progressives. It is basically one between Christianity and atheism. The Korean church must feel a heavy sense of responsibility for her role in establishing a free and democratic system in the Republic of Korea. First of all, She must be a place that protects and realizes religious freedom. She must also be able to take on the role of checking political forces through moral authority, participating in the legislative process and expressing opinions on national policies through civil movements, and educating citizens to cultivate civic virtue.
