국문 초록

본 연구는 초기 학령기 자녀를 둔 맞벌이 부부를 대상으로, 가사와 자녀 양육의 역할 분담 협상 과정을 질적으로 분석했다. 역할 분담 결과에 초점을 맞춘 정태적 분석에서 벗어나, 본 연구는 실제 부부 관계 맥락에서 협상의 역동성과 메커니즘을 탐구했다. 분석 결과, 출산 후 아내에게 양육 부담이 집중되며 협상이 시작되었으나, 성별화된 역할 구조 속에서 비대칭적으로 전개되었다. 특히 '여성=주 양육자, 남성=주 생계부양자'라는 전통적 성 역할 규범은 맞벌이라는 조건 속에서 와해된 듯 보이지만, '역할 우선순위'라는 형태로 재구성되어 여전히 작동했다. 이로 인해 아내가 소득에서 우위를 점하더라도 기존 구도를 전환하기는 어려웠으며, 협상은 남편의 생계부양자 지위를 위협하지 않는 범위에서만 가능했다. 초기 적극적 협상을 시도했던 아내들은 점차구조적 한계를 체감하며 적응과 타협으로 대응했다. 이러한 불균형은 단순한 노동배분을 넘어 개인 및 가족의 여가활동과 생활양식 전반에 걸쳐 젠더화된 기대와 실천으로 연결되어 있었다. 따라서 역할 분담의 균형을 위해 부부 단위 성평등한 역할 파트너십 제도 강화, 부모 대상 양육 기술 교육, 공동 양육 모델 확산을 위한 미디어 교육 등 사회문화적 조건 개선이 필요함을 제언한다.

영문 초록

This study qualitatively examines how dual-earner couples with early school-age children negotiate the division of housework and childcare, moving beyond outcome-focused, static accounts to the dynamics and mechanisms of negotiation. We find that bargaining typically begins as care work concentrates on wives after childbirth and then unfolds asymmetrically within gendered role structures. The normative pairing of “mother-caregiver/father-breadwinner,” though seemingly unsettled under dual earning, is reconstituted as a “priority of roles” that narrows what is negotiable. When husbands hold advantages in income or time, negotiations center on instrumental efficiency; when wives hold such advantages, practical criteria recede and traditional norms silently set the baseline, keeping egalitarian value questions off the table. As a result, bargaining proceeds only insofar as it does not threaten men’s breadwinner status, and many wives shift from early assertive bargaining to accommodation. These dynamics spill over into leisure and family lifestyles. The findings suggest strengthening egalitarian couple partnerships, parenting-skills education, and media initiatives promoting co-parenting.
