OBJECTIVES This study aimed to explore the preparatory experiences of recreational sports participants undergoing pre-training for lifeguard certification. Specifically, the focus was on understanding their motivations for pursuing certification and the experiences encountered during the process. METHODS Five individuals with prior experience in lifeguard pre-training were selected as participants. All were recreational athletes in their 20s to 40s who regularly engaged in swimming. In-depth interviews were conducted twice with each participant between March and April 2024, with each session lasting approximately 30 to 50 minutes. A semi-structured interview format was used, and all sessions were audio-recorded. Supplementary materials and relevant evidence provided by the participants were also collected. The transcribed data were analyzed by grouping similar content into sub-concepts and organizing them into overarching thematic categories. To enhance the credibility of the findings, participant verification, peer debriefing, and triangulation were applied throughout the data collection and analysis phases. RESULTS The motivations for pursuing lifeguard certification were categorized into two main themes: personal achievement and career development. Aspects of learning and growth were classified as growth through quality training and personal effort, and mutual development through peer teaching. Challenges identified during the process included high entry barriers within the examination system and training programs characterized by limited accessibility and practicality. Specifically, participants reported being driven by a desire for personal achievement and career advancement. They noted skill improvements through structured training and reported enhanced learning in mentor-mentee peer interactions. However, participants also described significant challenges related to the demanding nature of the examination and the insufficient practical relevance and accessibility of available training programs. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the need to revise the lifeguard certification examination system and enhance training programs to improve accessibility and real-world applicability. It is concluded that pre-training programs should be designed with a stronger emphasis on practical skills, and the certification process should incorporate considerations for gender-related differences in performance and participation.
