국문 초록

본 연구는 엘리엇의 『실천적인 고양이들에 대한 올드 파썸의 책』에 등장하는 고양이 캐릭터들을 칼 융의 심리유형 이론에 근거한 마이어스-브릭스 성격유형지표(MBTI) 이론을 적용하여 분석한다. 엘리엇이 시에서 묘사한 고양이들은 겉으로는 익살스럽고 유쾌하게 보였으나, 실제로는 인간의 성격 유형과 사회적 역동성에 대한 중요한 통찰을 제공한다. 본 연구는 시의 정밀한 독해를 통해 각 고양이의 행동 특성과 표현 양식을 MBTI의 16가지 성격유형에 따라 체계적으로 분류한다. 이러한 분석을 통해 캐릭터들이 단순한 의인화의 범주를 넘어, 복합적인 인간 심리 패턴의 시적 구현체로 기능함을 입증한다. 연구 결과는 성격이론을 문학 분석에 적용하는 해석적 가치를 강조하였으며, 특히 인물 구성, 상징 구조, 작가의 의도 파악에 있어 이론적 유용성을 드러낸다. 더불어 이러한 학제적 접근은 모더니즘 문학에 대한 심층적 이해를 촉진함으로써 교육적 활용 가능성 또한 제시한다. 아울러 본 논문은 MBTI와 같은 심리학적 모델이 문학 해석 및 교육 실천의 분석 도구로 효과적으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여준다. 이를 통해 문학심리학 분야에 새로운 연구 방향을 제시한다. 본 연구는 문학과 심리학의 분석을 통해 독자들에게 모더니즘 문학의 다층적 의미를 전달하는 데 기여한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the characterization of feline figures in T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats through the analytical lens of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), which is rooted in Carl Jung’s theory of psychological types. While Eliot’s poetic portrayals of cats appear whimsical and humorous on the surface, they are found to offer substantive insights into human personality types and the dynamics of social interaction. Through a close reading methodology, the research systematically classifies the behavioral traits and expressive modes of each cat according to the sixteen MBTI personality types. The analysis demonstrates that these feline characters function as poetic embodiments of complex human psychological patterns, rather than merely serving as anthropomorphized animals. The findings highlight the interpretive value of applying personality theory to literary analysis, particularly in the areas of character construction, symbolic structure, and authorial intention. Furthermore, this interdisciplinary approach is shown to provide pedagogical benefits by facilitating deeper engagement with modernist literature. Ultimately, the study contributed to the field of literary psychology by illustrating how psychological models such as MBTI can be effectively utilized as an analytical tool for both literary interpretation and educational practice.
