국문 초록

본 연구는 『동조자』 (The Sympathizer)의 주인공 “나”와 만(Man)을 부르디외와 베버의 사회학적 이론을 바탕으로 고찰한다. “나”는 경제적 자본은 제한적이지만, 엘리트 교육을 통해 획득한 높은 수준의 문화자본과 미국 내 인맥이라는 사회적 자본을 보유하고 있다. 이러한 점에서 그는 “상속자본”은 부족하지만 “획득자본”은 상당하다고 할 수 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그는 사회적 권위와 인정을 뜻하는 상징자본 끝까지 결여되어 있다. 이런 맥락에서 그가 CIA와 베트콩의 이중 간첩을 수행하는 것은 상징자본을 획득하려는 시도로 해석될 수 있지만, 결국 그 시도는 실패로 끝난다. 이에 반해, 만은 다양한 형태의 자본을 풍부하게 보유하고 있으며, 특히 상징자본이 매우 풍족하다. 그는 베버의 “카리스마적 지배” 개념을 구현하는 인물이나, 주인공과 본(Bon)을 재교육 수용소에서 풀어줌으로써 그 권력을 포기하게 된다. 만은 정치적 이념보다도 인간관계와 동료애 속에 체현된 사회자본을 더 중요시한다. 이러한 우선순위로 인해 그는 혁명 지도자로서 실패하게 되며, 정치 이념보다도 친구에 대한 충성을 선택함으로써 베트콩 지도자로서의 역할에 실패한다.

영문 초록

This study examines the protagonist, “I” and Man in The Sympathizer through Bourdieu’s and Weber’s sociological theories. “I” possesses limited economic capital but demonstrates substantial cultural capital, primarily through his elite education and social capital, his network of connections in the U.S.. In this regard, his “inherited capital” is deficient, whereas his “acquired capital” is considerable. Nevertheless, he consistently lacks symbolic capital—the recognition and legitimacy that confer social authority. His double spy between the Viet Cong and the CIA can be interpreted as an effort to achieve symbolic capital; however, this endeavor ultimately proves unsuccessful. In contrast, Man owns abundant types of capitals, with a particular wealth in symbolic capital. He exemplifies Weber’s notion of “charismatic domination,” yet ultimately renounces this power by freeing the protagonist and Bon from the reeducation camp. Man privileges social capital that embodied in personal relationships and camaraderie above other forms of capitals. His downfall as a revolutionary leader stems from this prioritization, as he chooses loyalty to friends over political ideology, thereby becoming a failed Viet Cong leader.
