존재 위백규의 『寰瀛誌』 연구 성과와 과제

국문 초록

본 연구는 조선 후기 호남의 대표적 실학자인 존재 위백규(1727~1798)의 지리지 『환영지』에 대한 기존 연구 성과를 체계적으로 검토하고, 향후 연구 과제를 제시하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 『환영지』는 동양의 전통적 천하관과 우주론에 입각하여 하늘과 땅의 구조를 체계적으로 설명한 독창적인 宇宙誌(cosmography)로서, 일반적인 지리지와는 차별되는 독특한 성격을 지닌다. 기존 연구는 위백규 및 『존재전서』 일반 연구, 『환영지』의 역사학적 연 구, 고지도 및 지리지학적 연구, 그리고 위백규의 지식 재구성과 세계 인식에 대한 연구로 분류할 수 있다. 특히 『환영지』 필사본에 수록된 ｢이마두천하도｣는 마테오 리치의 ｢곤여만국전도｣가 아닌 조선에서 독자적으로 제작된 천하도임이 밝혀졌으며, 이는 17세기 이후 조선 지식인들이 서구식 세계지도의 유입에 대해 전통적 지식 체계 내에서 수용하고 재해석하려는 노력의 산물로 평가된다. 향후 연구 과제로는 서지학 분야에서 다양한 판본(초고본, 정초본, 정서본, 목판본) 간의 정밀한 교감 작업과 학제적 접근을 통한 완전한 국역본 간행이 필요하며, 고지도·지리지 분야 에서는 ｢이마두천하도｣의 등장 배경과 목판본에서의 삭제 과정에 대한 심층 연구가 요구된다. 『환영지』는 단순한 지리 정보의 집적물이 아닌, 18세기 조선 지식인의 능동적인 지식 재구성 과정과 세계관의 변용을 보여주는 중요한 텍스트로서 지속적인 연구가 필요하다.

영문 초록

This study aims to systematically review existing research achievements on Hwanyugji (寰瀛誌), a geographical work by Jonjae Wi Baek-gyu (魏伯珪, 1727-1798), a representative practical learning scholar of the Honam region during the late Joseon period, and to present future research tasks. Hwanyugji is an original cosmography that systematically explains the structure of heaven and earth based on traditional East Asian cosmological and worldview concepts, possessing unique characteristics that distinguish it from conventional geographical works. Existing research can be categorized into general studies of Wi Baek-gyu and Jonjaejeongseo, historical studies of Hwanyugji, research on ancient maps and geographical literature, and studies on Wi Baek-gyu's knowledge reconstruction and world perception. Particularly, the “Imaducheonhado” (利瑪竇天下圖) included in the manuscript version of Hwanyugji has been identified not as Matteo Ricci's “Kunyu Wanguo Quantu” but as a world map independently created in Joseon. This represents the efforts of Joseon intellectuals after the 17th century to accept and reinterpret Western-style world maps within their traditional knowledge systems. Future research tasks include precise collation work among various editions (draft, revised draft, fair copy, and woodblock print versions) in the field of bibliography and the publication of complete translations through interdisciplinary approaches. In the field of ancient maps and geographical literature, in-depth research on the background of “Imaducheonhado's” emergence and its deletion process in the woodblock edition is required. Hwanyugji should be understood not merely as a collection of geographical information, but as an important text demonstrating the active knowledge reconstruction process and worldview transformation of 18th-century Joseon intellectuals, requiring continued research.
