Mechanisms Linking Experiences of Child Abuse and the Perpetration of Intimate Partner Violence: The Moderated Mediating Effect of Aggression and Self-Esteem

국문 초록

교제 폭력은 피해자에게 신체적, 정신적, 행동적 해악을 끼치는 심각한 사회적 문제이다. 본 연구는 교제 폭력 가해 행동의 메커니즘을 규명하기 위해, 한국형사·법무정책연구원이 「데이트 폭력 실태조사 2015」를 통해 수집한 미혼 남성 2,000명을 대상으로 한 데이트 폭력 가해 실태 자료를 활용하였다. 분석 결과, 자신의 현재 또는 이전의 교제 상대에게 최소 한 가지 유형의 신체적또는 성적 폭력을 가한 응답자의 과반수(54.4%)가 아동기 부모로부터 학대를 당한 경험이 있는것으로 나타났다. 또한, 아동기 학대 경험과 교제 폭력 가해 행동 사이에 작용하는 공격성의 매개효과는 신체적 폭력과 성적 폭력 모두에 대해 통계적으로 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 이는 아동기부모로부터의 학대 경험이 공격성을 높여 교제 관계에서 신체적 폭력과 성적 폭력의 가능성을 증가시킨다는 것을 보여준다. 이와 더불어 공격성과 신체적 및 성적 폭력 가해 행동 간의 관계를 자아존중감이 조절하는지에 대한 조절된 매개효과를 검증한 결과, 공격성과 자아존중감의 조절된매개효과는 신체적 폭력 가해에서는 유의한 것으로 나타났으나, 성적 폭력 가해에서는 유의하지않은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 교제 폭력 가해의 메커니즘이 폭력의 유형에 따라 다를 수있음을 시사한다. 연구 결과를 바탕으로, 교제 폭력 가해 행동의 예방과 개입을 위한 프로그램 및향후 연구 방향에 대해 논의하였다.

영문 초록

Intimate partner violence(IPV) against women is a pervasive and serious problem in South Korea. Using nationally representative data from the Violence Against Women: Focused on Intimate Partner Violence study, this study explored the underlying mechanisms of IPV perpetration among men in South Korea. Specifically, this research examined whether aggression mediates the relationship between experiencing child abuse and IPV perpetration(i.e., physical and sexual violence) in adulthood. Furthermore, this study tested whether the indirect effect of experiencing child abuse on IPV perpetration via aggression is moderated by self-esteem. This study revealed that over half of the respondents(54.4%) who perpetrated at least one type of physical or sexual IPV had experienced child abuse. This study found a significant relationship between experiencing child abuse and both physical and sexual IPV perpetration, as well as a significant mediating effect of aggression in this relationship. Furthermore, the study identified that self-esteem moderated the mediating process by which experiences of child abuse affected physical IPV perpetration via aggression, but not sexual IPV perpetration. Implications for IPV prevention and intervention strategies and future research directions are discussed.
