국문 초록

본 논문은 얼굴을 단순한 감정 표현의 기호나 인물 식별의 기호적, 시각적 단서로 환원하지 않고, 해석 불가능성과 윤리적 호출의 계기를 품은 초-논리적 현상으로 분석한다. 움베르토 에코와 폴 에크먼을 중심으로 한 기호학적 접근은 얼굴을 문화적 코드에 따라 해석 가능한 구조로 설명하며, 이는 스토리텔링의 정합성과 감정 흐름을 조율하는 데 중요한 이론적 근거를 제공한다. 그러나 이러한 얼굴의 코드화는 때때로 감정의 과잉, 침묵, 고통과 같은 경험을 충분히 포착하지 못하며, 오히려 이야기의 흐름을 멈추거나 전환시키는 해석 불가능한 순간을 마주하면 무력해진다. 조르주 바타유는 이를 '의심할 수 없는 얼굴'로 개념화하며, 사실상 얼굴이 기호 체계를 교란하고 감응을 초과하는 지점에서 의미 생성의 균열을 유도한다고 본다. 더불어 에마뉘엘 레비나스는 얼굴을 타자의 현현이자 ‘죽이지 말라’는 윤리의 현현으로 간주하며, 얼굴자체가 말 이전의 윤리적 소환으로 작동함을 강조한다. 그러므로 얼굴은 의미를 전달하는 기호인 동시에, 의미를 초과하는 윤리적 붕괴로 작동하며, 이러한 이중 구조는 스토리의 기원과 스토리텔링의 가능성을 재-사유하게 만든다. 본 논문은 이러한 관점에서 얼굴의 초-논리성이 서사 발생의 기원이자 향후 포스트-시네마적 캐릭터 구축에 필요한 결정적인 이론적 토대가 될 수 있음을 주장한다.

영문 초록

This article analyzes the face not as a simple symbol of emotional expression or a visual clue for identifying individuals, but as an the other-logical(l’outre-logique) phenomenon that contains the seeds of interpretive ambiguity and ethical implications. A semiotic approach centered on Umberto Eco and Paul Ekman explains the face as a structure that can be interpreted according to cultural codes, providing an important theoretical basis for coordinating the coherence of storytelling and the flow of emotions. However, this codification of the face often fails to adequately capture experiences such as emotional excess, silence, and pain, and instead generates moments of interpretive ambiguity that halt or shift the narrative flow. Georges Bataille conceptualizes this as the “unquestionable face,” arguing that the face disrupts the sign system and induces a crack in meaning generation at the point where it exceeds perception. Additionally, Emmanuel Levinas regards the face as the manifestation of the other and the manifestation of the ethical imperative “do not kill,” emphasizing that the face functions as an ethical summoning prior to language. Thus, the face functions both as a sign that conveys meaning and as an ethical intrusion that exceeds meaning, and this double structure prompts a rethinking of the origin of narrative and the possibility of storytelling. This article argues that, from this perspective, the other-logic of the face can serve as a condition for the emergence of narrative and as a decisive theoretical foundation for the construction of post-cinematic characters in the future.
