국문 초록

As artificial intelligence (AI) has been as a core technology of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, its influence has permeated all aspects of society, including national defense. Military applications of AI are fundamentally transforming the nature of warfare, as seen in the United States’ Project Maven, Ukraine’s use of AI-powered battlefield surveillance, and the increasing deployment of autonomous drones. Beyond weapon automation, AI enhances military operations through intelligent surveillance and reconnaissance, predictive analytics for decision-making, cyber warfare, and logistical management. These advancements improve battlefield awareness, operational efficiency, and strategic planning. Based on the background, this study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of regulatory trends centered on the use of military AI, especially AWS. The purpose of this study is to analyze the complex regulatory trends surrounding the use of military artificial intelligence (AI), especially autonomous weapons systems (AWS). To this end, the main arguments are established by classifying the theoretical discussion into strong regulatory theory, technology priority theory, and limit regulatory theory which is divided into the limited regulation using the existing legal system and limited regulation with a new framework. Based on this, we compared and analyzed the current status of policies on decisions of the international community and international discussions in each country through theoretical analysis and provided.
