Against the backdrop of escalating strategic competition between China and the United States, the political and security dynamics of Northeast Asia have grown increasingly complex, with the diplomatic interactions among China, South Korea, and North Korea emerging as key to understanding regional developments. Grounded in realism and the theory of triangular relationships, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of the foreign policies of these three nations from a political and security perspective. The study finds that heightened Sino-American competition has compelled North Korea to prioritize regime survival through the pursuit of nuclear capabilities, further reinforcing political and security ties between China and North Korea. While China and South Korea continue to maintain economic collaboration, notable divergences persist in security-related matters, particularly concerning military alliances and defense strategies. Additionally, the three nations adopt distinctive approaches to managing national image and strengthening their international influence in discourse. Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed: First, China should further consolidate its strategic partnership with North Korea, offering political and security support to maintain stability on the Korean Peninsula. Second, in addressing security disagreements with South Korea, China should strengthen diplomatic engagement to balance economic cooperation with security considerations, thereby easing tensions. Third, China should take on a proactive role in regional security frameworks, fostering dialogue and cooperation to ensure long-term stability in Northeast Asia’s political and security landscape. Lastly, China should leverage cultural diplomacy and international collaboration to enhance its global image and expand its influence in international discourse.
