The study explores the communicative repertoires of an expatriate employee in a multilingual workplace, focusing on his experience after being relocated to an American branch of a global Japanese company. Despite limited English proficiency and prior experience using English as a Japanese speaker, effective communication in English is crucial for successfully completing his expatriate assignment in a multilingual and multicultural workplace. The study investigates how he constructs communicative repertoires when engaging with coworkers from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Employing a qualitative case study approach, data were gathered from multiple sources, including observations, interviews, field notes and clarification emails. Findings reveal that his communicative repertoires were shaped by language proficiency, cultural values of the home country, and personal preferences. Notably, he predominantly used English to enhance his membership within the workplace despite language limitations and communication challenges. Furthermore, his navigation between two languages showcased a flexible approach, embracing both separate and bilingual positions, highlighting individual agency in shaping communicative repertoires tailored to specific communication needs. These findings suggest that multilingual organizations should foster both work environments and training programs that promote language flexibility, enabling expatriate employees to proactively shape their communicative repertoires and strategies within the workplace setting.
