국문 초록

논문은 일제강점기 공주 지역에서 활동한 미국 감리교 선교사 사부인(사애리시)의 여성 교육 선교활동이 여성 독립운동, 특히 유관순을 비롯한 인물들의 민족의식과 주체 형성에 어떤 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석하고 있다. 공주는 행정·지리적으로 충청남도의 중심지로, 기독교 선교사들에게 중요한 선교 거점이었다. 사부인은 여성 교육을 통해 여성들의 문해력 향상, 자아 인식, 사회 참여를 이끌었으며, 특히 영명학교를 중심으로 여성들이 민족의식과 독립운동 정신을 키워나갈 수 있는 토대를 마련했다. 그녀의 교육활동은 단순한 종교 선교를 넘어서서 여성들의 자율성과 주체성을 고취시키는 방향으로 전개되었고, 이는 3·1운동 당시 여성들이 적극적으로 참여하는 배경이 되었다. 유관순 또한 이 교육의 영향을 받은 인물로, 기독교적 가치와 민족적 자각이 결합된 여성독립운동의 상징적 인물로 성장하였다. 논문은 이처럼 여성 선교 교육이 일제의 억압 속에서도 여성 주체 형성과 민족 독립운동에 기여한 중요한 요인이었음을 강조하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzes the influence of American Methodist missionary Mrs. Appenzeller (Sa Ae-ri-si) on women’s education and the independence movement in Gongju during the Japanese colonial period, focusing particularly on the formation of national consciousness and identity among figures such as Yu Gwan-sun. Gongju, as a central administrative and geographical hub in South Chungcheong Province, was a significant mission base for Christian missionaries. Through her educational efforts, Mrs. Appenzeller promoted women’s literacy, self-awareness, and social participation. Centered around Yeongmyeong School, her work laid the foundation for women to develop national consciousness and a spirit of independence. Her educational mission went beyond religious teachings to foster autonomy and subjectivity among women, which contributed to their active involvement in the March 1st Movement. Yu Gwan-sun, influenced by this educational background, emerged as a symbolic figure of the women’s independence movement, integrating Christian values with national awareness. This study underscores that missionary-led women’s education played a pivotal role in empowering women and contributing to the national independence movement under Japanese oppression.
