장르화되는 시간, 박물화되는 소리 : 음악-문화 기호로서의 ‘7080’

국문 초록

‘7080’은 2000년대 대중매체에 본격적으로 등장하여 음악 창작·연행·향유자의 정체성, 연행 사건 및 음악적 공간의 속성, 음악 작품 혹은 상품의 내적 장르나 스타일 등을 지시하는 데 폭넓게 사용되고 있다. 본 연구는 ‘박물화’라는 분석틀을 통하여 ‘7080’이라는 기호가 등장하는 2020년대 중반의 민족지적 현재를 기술하고 설명하려는 시도이다. 본고는 ‘7080’이 1970-80년대 뿌리를 둔 특정한 음악 장르/스타일 다발의 실체 혹은 그로부터의 선별 결과라는 기존 인식틀에 반대하면서, ‘7080’이 음악-기호로서 굳어지고 그 생명력을 유지해나가는 과정의 근간은 당 시대의 포괄적 주인이라 주장하는 이들의 현재적인 향유자 정체성에 전적으로 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 해당 정체성의 소유자들이 지금 즐기고자 하는 모든 음악에 ‘7080’이라는 꼬리표를 붙이는 항시적 재박물화 과정을 통하여 기호가 함의하는 음악의 종류와 속성들은 끊임없이 바뀌어왔다. 또한 그 과정에서, 이전에 본질이라 여겨졌던 의미와는 무관하거나 심지어는 이전의 의미를 배반하는 기호로 변모하기도 하여왔다. 나아가, 기의만 갈아끼워지는 것이 아니라 기표 자체조차 시간의 흐름에 따라 ‘7090’, ‘7080+90’과 같은 방식으로 변하는 모습이 발견되는데, 이 역시 ‘7080’이라는 정체성이 그 어느 과거에도 뿌리내리지 않은 채 현재에 관한 자기인식 및 의식 속에서 송두리째 갱신되는 문화-기호사 과정의 한 단계를 보여준다.

영문 초록

The term '7080' has been widely used in the mainstream mass-mediascape of the Korean peninsula since the 2000s to refer to the identities of music creators, performers, and listeners, the characteristics of music-related events or places, or the musical genres or styles. This study attempts to describe and explain the ethnographic present of the mid-2020s where the expression of '7080' appears everywhere, with the observational and analytical framework of museumification. On the contrary to the previous academic works that analyze ‘7080’ as a bundle of (selected) preexisting musical genres/styles rooted in the period of 1970s and 1980s, this paper argues that the process of solidification of '7080' as a music-related sign is not something about 'internal' musical genres of the specific time period, but is rather about the current listener-identity of those who consider themselves to be the owners of the experiences associated with that era. Through a process of perpetual re-museumification in which the ‘7080’ identity holders constantly attach the label of '7080' to all musical works and behaviors they are ready to enjoy 'now', the implication of the signifier '7080' is constantly changing. In addition, this museumification process often transforms its meanings into a totally new one, or even betrays their previous meanings. The phenomenon that the signifier itself is changing over time, as shown in the cases of '7090' and '7080+90,' shows the process of re-recognizing and updating the identity of '7080' among its members within the context of always-new present. This change of sign-form itself becomes a part of the two decade’s history of the cultural-symbol '7080'.
