선충원(沈從文) 초기 소설에 나타난 공간 체험의 의미망 연구

국문 초록

선충원 초기 소설은 많은 수량에도 불구하고 ‘습작’ 정도로 평가 절하되어왔다. 본 논문은 좀 더 입체적인 독서 수행을 통해 기존 평가 너머에 존재하는, 선충원 초기 소설의 새로운 함의를 규명코자 한다. 특히 초기 소설에 반복적으로 나타나는 공간 체험의 문학적 구현 양상에 주목해 그가 베이징에서 새로운 정체성을 찾아가던 중에 맞닥뜨린 곤궁과 좌절을 살펴본다. 요컨대 샹시에서 베이징으로, 다시 여우시회관에서 아파트로 이어지는 그의 공간 체험은 사회적 신분의 폐기 및 획득과 밀접하게 연관된다. 선충원은 고향 샹시의 ‘그러한 삶의 공식’에서 벗어나 새로운 정체성을 찾기 위해 베이징에 왔다. 대학 진학에 실패한 후 베이징대 인근의 아파트에서 창작한 여러 편의 소설에는 문학청년으로서 정체성 확보에 곤궁을 겪는, ‘시골 사람’ 선충원의 어색하고 적막한 감정이 묘사되고 있다. 작품 속 인물은 홀로 번화한 거리를 걸으며 군중을 엿보고 관찰한다. 그리고 그들에게 들키거나 배척당할 때 강한 수치심을 느끼며 집―아파트에 돌아온다. 작품 속에서 줄곧 등장하는 ‘곰팡이 핀 좁은 아파트’는 이에, 초라하고 부끄러운 작가 자신의 ‘내면의 공간’에 다름 아니다. <단식이후>(사람들에게 배척당하는 것에 대한 분노), <겁쟁이>(여자들을 뒤따르다가 들켰을 때의 수치심), <아파트에서>(아파트에 돌아와 침대에 누워 흘리는 눈물) 등에는 베이징의 번화한 거리를 홀로 배회하며 느꼈을, 선충원의 고독과 욕망이 고스란히 담겨 있다.

영문 초록

Despite the large quantity of Shen Congwen(沈從文)’s early novels, they have been largely dismissed as mere “apprentice works.”. This paper focuses on the literary representation of spatial experiences repeatedly depicted in Shen Congwen’s early works, uncovering new implications beyond the conventional evaluations. In short, his spatial experiences—moving from Xiangxi(湘西) to Beijing(北京), and then from the Youxi Association Hall(酉西會館) to an apartment(公寓)—are closely linked to the abandonment and acquisition of social identity. Shen Congwen left his hometown of Xiangxi to escape “that way of life” and seek a new identity in Beijing. After failing to gain admission to university, he wrote several novels in an apartment near Beijing University, depicting the awkwardness and solitude of a “countryman” struggling to establish his identity as a literary youth. In these works, the protagonist walks alone through bustling streets, observing and eavesdropping on the crowd. When he feels noticed or rejected by them, he experiences deep shame and returns home—to his apartment. The “narrow, damp, moldy apartment(窄而霉小斋)” that repeatedly appears in his works is none other than a reflection of the author’s own “inner space,” filled with feelings of insignificance and shame. However, in reality, he is also an ambitious observer of the crowd. His works vividly capture the loneliness and desires he must have felt while wandering the bustling streets of Beijing—anger at being excluded by others(<絶食以後>), shame when caught following women (<怯漢>), tears shed while lying in bed after returning to his apartment (<公寓中>), and the solitary figure of “I” aimlessly roaming the lively streets.
