국문 초록

이 연구는 Lakatos의 증명과 반박이라는 철학적 관점을 바탕으로, Wang과 Hsiung(1942)이 제안한 탱그램 정리를 사고실험을 통해 재해석하였다. Wang과 Hsiung의 연구에서는 탱그램 정리를 ‘탱그램으로 만들 수 있는 볼록다각형의 개수는 13개이다’라고 진술하고 있으나, 실제로는 ‘서로 크기가 같은 직각이등변삼각형 16개를 결합하여 만들 수 있는 볼록다각형은 20개이다’라는 진술을 증명하는 데 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 본 연구는 이러한 수학적 의미를 반영하여 기존 정리를 다양한 논점을 바탕으로 수정하였으며, 최종적으로 ‘칠교판으로 만들 수 있는 볼록다각형의 개수는 19개를 넘을 수 없다’라는 형태로 재진술할 것을 제안하였다. 이러한 탐구 과정을 통해 정리는 고정된 명제가 아니라 반례와 논증을 통해 점진적으로 진화하며, 상황에 따라 서로 다른 결론에 도달할 수도 있음을 본 사례를 통해 보여주고자 하였다. 아울러 정리와 보조정리의 관계, 용어의 외연 확장, 반례에 대한 다양한 대응 전략 등을 중심으로 수학교육에 적용 가능한 시사점을 제시하였다.

영문 초록

This study reinterprets the tangram theorem proposed by Wang and Hsiung (1942) through a thought experiment, grounded in Lakatos’s philosophical framework of “proofs and refutations.” Although Wang and Hsiung stated the theorem as “The number of convex polygons that can be formed using a tangram is 13,” their actual proof focuses on demonstrating that twenty convex polygons can be formed by combining sixteen congruent right isosceles triangles. In light of this mathematical implication, the study reexamines the original theorem from multiple perspectives and ultimately proposes a revised version: “The number of convex polygons that can be formed using a seven-piece puzzle does not exceed 19.” This inquiry highlights that a mathematical theorem is not a fixed statement but an evolving construct shaped through counterexamples and ongoing argumentation. Furthermore, it explores implications for mathematics education by examining the relationship between a theorem and its lemmas, the extension of mathematical term, and various strategies for addressing counterexamples.
