해운사의 CSR 활동에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 KOSPI 상장 해운사가 CSR 활동에 얼마나 적극적인지 실증 분석하는 것이다. ESG는 기업 경영뿐 아니라 정치, 경제, 사회, 문화 곳곳에 자리 잡고 있다. ESG라는 용어가 자리 잡기 전까지 오랫동안 CSR이라는 용어가 주로 사용되었다. 기존 연구에서는 ESG 또는 CSR 측정 지표로 한국ESG기준원의 ESG 평가 등급, 경제정의실천시민연합 경제정의연구소에서 평가하는 KEJI Index 등이 주로 사용되었다. 본 연구에서는 CSR 측정 지표로 기업의 기부금 지출액을 사용한다. 2001년부터 2023년까지 KOSPI 상장기업을 대상으로 CSR 활동 수준을 실증 분석한 결과, 해운사는 CSR 활동에 적극적이지 않은 것으로 나타났다. 일반 기업의 ESG 관련 연구는 매우 활발하게 수행되고 있지만, 해운사의 ESG 또는 CSR 관련 연구는 찾아보기 어렵다. 본 논문은 KOSPI 상장 해운사의 CSR 활동을 실증 분석했다는 점에서 의미가 있다. ESG, CSR 및 지속가능경영은 상장기업 등 대기업에는 선택이 아닌 필수로 자리 잡아가고 있으며 점차 중견기업까지 확대되고 있는 추세이다. 연기금 및 공제회 등 기관투자자들은 피투자회사의 지속가능경영 활동을 평가하여 투자한다. 은행이 해운선사에 여신을 제공할 때 탄소배출과 같이 기후변화에 미치는 영향을 심사에 반영하도록 의무화한 포세이돈 원칙도 점차 확대되고 있다. 해운사는 지분증권 및 채무증권 투자자뿐 아니라 이해관계자의 눈높이에 맞는 적극적인 CSR 활동을 펼쳐야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to empirically analyze the involvement of KOSPI-listed shipping companies in CSR activities. ESG is integrated not only into corporate management but also into politics, economy, society, and culture. Historically, the term CSR was predominantly used before the adoption of the term ESG. In previous studies, the primary indicators for measuring ESG or CSR were the ESG evaluation grade from the Korea Institute of Corporate Governance and Sustainability and the KEJI Index by the Economic Justice Research Institute of the Citizens' Coalition for Economic Justice. In this study, charitable donation expenditures serve as a CSR measurement indicator. An empirical analysis of CSR activities among KOSPI-listed shipping companies from 2001 to 2023 revealed that these companies are not actively engaged in CSR activities. While research on ESG in general companies is being actively conducted, studies focusing on ESG or CSR in shipping companies are scarce. This paper is significant because it provides an empirical analysis of the CSR activities of KOSPI-listed shipping companies. For large firms such as listed companies, ESG, CSR, and sustainable management are becoming indispensable and are increasingly being adopted by mid-sized companies. Institutional investors, including pension funds and mutual aid associations, assess the sustainable management activities of the companies they invest in and base their investment decisions on these evaluations. The Poseidon Principles, which require banks to account for climate change impacts like carbon emissions when financing shipping companies, are also widening their scope. Shipping companies should proactively participate in CSR activities that align with the expectations of stakeholders, as well as equity and debt securities investors.
