국문 초록

『조선불교월보』는 현존하는 한국 근대 불교 최초의 종합잡지로 논설･사료･번역･문학 등 다양한 내용을 담고 있으며, 특히 300여 편의 창작 한시를 수록하고 있다는 점에서 주목할 만하다. 이는 잡지가 정보 전달과 포교의 기능을 넘어 불교적 사유를 문학적으로 형상화하는 중요한 역할을 수행한 것인데, 지금까지 이에 관한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 따라서 본 연구는 『조선불교월보』에 실린 한시 전체를 대상으로 그 수록 양상과 경향성을 파악하고 내용적 특징을 분석하여, 한국 불교의 근대적 변화 속에서 불교잡지가 한시 양식을 활용하여 담아낸 것이 무엇인지 고찰하였다. 그 결과, 일차적으로는 목록작업을 통해 창간호인 1호부터 마지막으로 발간된 19호까지 매호에 빠짐없이 한시가 수록되었으며, 총 311수가 실려 있음을 확인하였다. 이들 한시는 불교의 핵심 교리인 一切皆苦, 諸行無常, 諸法無我, 涅槃寂靜을 함축적으로 전달하는 수단으로 활용되었으며, 수행자의 심경과 깨달음을 공유하는 방식으로도 기능하였다. 또한 특정 사찰과 인물 중심의 교류가 이루어졌으며, 차운과 문답 형식의 한시를 통해 수행자 간의 유대가 형성되고 사상이 심화되었다. 이는 『조선불교월보』에 수록된 한시가 단순한 문학적 창작이 아니라, 근대 불교 담론을 형성하고 불교계의 소통을 촉진하는 중요한 매개체였음을 보여준다. 즉, 불교 교리와 수행자의 내면세계를 감성적으로 전달하는 효과적인 형식이었으며, 근대 불교 지식인들은 이를 통해 제한적으로나마 불교적 실천과 사유를 공유하고 확산하는 장을 마련할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

Joseonbulgyowolbo is the first comprehensive magazine of modern Korean Buddhism in existence, and contains a wide range of articles, historical records, translations, and literature, and is especially noteworthy in that it contains over 300 original Chinese poems. This means that the magazine played an important role in embodying Buddhist thought in literature beyond the function of conveying information and missionary work, but little research has been done on this to date. Therefore, this study examined what Buddhist magazines actively used the Chinese poetry style in the modern changes of Korean Buddhism by grasping the overall pattern and trend of the Chinese poetry published in the Joseonbulgyowolbo and analyzing its characteristic aspects in terms of content. As a result, it was confirmed that a total of 311 poems were included in each issue, from the first issue, No. 1, through the list work, to the last issue, No. 19. The poetry contained in Joseonbulgyowolbo were used as a means to implicitly convey the core Buddhist doctrines of ‘Dukkha(一切皆苦)’, ‘Anicca(諸行無常)’, ‘Anatta(諸法無我)’, ‘Nirvana(涅槃寂靜)’ and also functioned as a way to share the mind and enlightenment of the practitioner. In addition, there was a person-centered exchange with a specific temple, and through Rhapsody on the same rhyme and Chinese Poetry in the form of questions and answers, the bond between the practitioners and the ideology deepened. This shows that Chinese Poetry was an important medium to form modern Buddhist discourse and promote communication among practitioners beyond simple literary creation. In other words, Chinese poetry was an effective way to emotionally convey Buddhist doctrine and the inner world of the practitioner, which allowed modern Buddhist intellectuals to share and spread Buddhist practices and thoughts on a limited basis.
