국문 초록

본 연구는 『흠영』에 기록된 사서 편찬 기획을 주목하여 그 속에 담긴 유만주의 역사학적 지향을 통시적으로 살피는 동시에, 그가 실제로 역사서를 편찬한 양상이 어떠했는지 기록을 통해 실증적으로 밝히는 것을 목표로 한다. 초기 유만주의 사서 편찬 기획은 그의 필요와 관심에 따라 다양하게 구상되었던 것으로 보인다. 이 중에서도 특히 『삼고계첩』과 『삼강』은 주목을 요하는데, 다른 경우와 달리 단순한 기획을 넘어 실제 집필 작업이 유의미한 수준으로 이루어졌던 것이 확인되기 때문이다. 특히 역사학자로서 유만주가 『삼강』에 부여한 중요성과 의미는 상당한 정도였는데, 기본적으로 주자의 『자치통감강목』을 따르고자 했다는 점에서 전통적인 성리학적 역사관을 따라 강목체 사서를 위주로 했던 그의 역사학적 지향이 드러난다. 초기에 중국사와 강목체 위주의 사서를 기획했던 유만주는 후기에 들어서자 동국사로 관심을 넓히고, 기사본말이나 인물전집 등 다양한 사서 편찬 체제를 구상하면서 강목체 위주이던 초기의 경향성을 벗어나 확장된 면모를 보인다. 특히 『사기』에 대한 기존의 부정적 입장을 수정하고 그 역사학적 가치를 인정한 점이 사서 편찬 기획의 내용에 반영되어 있어 주목된다. 그러는 한편 초기부터 진행해 온 강목체 사서의 탐구와 편찬 작업도 계속 이어가면서 그 깊이를 더해갔는데, 그래서인지 후기에 기획된 사서들은 실제 편찬으로까지 이어지지는 못했다. 유만주가 사학에 몰두한 근본적인 동기이자 궁극적인 지향점은 다름 아닌 ‘좋은 책을 편찬하여 후세에 이름을 남기는 것’에 있었다. 그가 『삼강』을 비롯한 수많은 방대한 역사서들을 기획한 것은 이러한 정신적 환경에서 기인한 바가 크며, 그가 살던 18세기의 박학적 학문 경향과도 관련이 있다. 이러한 정신적･시대적 환경 속에서 유만주는 꾸준히 역사학에 몰두하여 자기 쇄신의 궤적을 그려갔으며, 끝내 성리학적 사관 중심성에서 벗어났다는 점에서 주목된다.

영문 초록

This study aims to examine Yū Manju's historical orientation contained in Heumyeong in a diachronic manner, and to empirically reveal the actual process and aspects of how he compiled historical texts based on available records. In the early days, the historiographical projects conceived by Yū Manju seems to have been conceived in various ways according to his needs and interests. Among these, Samgogyecheop and Samgang stand out as particularly significant because, unlike other projects, these were not just simple plans but were actually carried out to a meaningful extent. Notably, Yū Manju placed considerable importance on Samgang, and his commitment to it reveals a strong adherence to traditional Neo-Confucian historical views, as he primarily followed Zhu Xi’s Zizhi Tongjian Gangmu and favored the use of the Gangmu-style historiography. While Yū Manju initially focused on Chinese history and Gangmu-style historical writing, by his later years, his interests expanded to include the history of the Eastern Kingdom(Dongguk), and he began to conceive of various types of historical works, such as annals and biographical collections. This shift reflects a broadening of his historiographical scope, moving away from the Gangmu-focused approach of his early work. Notably, Yū Manju revised his earlier negative stance on Shiji, recognizing its historical value, which is evident in his later historiographical plans. Meanwhile, his ongoing exploration and compilation of Gangmu-style historical texts continued to deepen, so the later historiographical projects he planned did not lead to actual compilation. Yū Manju’s fundamental motivation for his dedication to historiography, and his ultimate aim, was to compile good books and leave a name for posterity. His planning of numerous large-scale historical books, including Samgang, stemmed largely from this spiritual environment, and is also related to the erudite academic trend of the 18th century when he lived. Within this spiritual and historical context, Yumanju consistently pursued historical study, creating a trajectory of self-reformation, and it is noteworthy that he eventually escaped from the Neo-Confucian philosophy centrality.
