존재하게 되는 것은 해악인가? - 데이비드 베너타의 ‘반출생주의’ 비판

국문 초록

오늘날 우리나라가 처한 현실을 단적으로 드러내는 문구 중 하나는 ‘아이가 태어나지 않는 나라’라는 표현이다. 놀라운 산업화를 이룩한 지 채 반백 년이 조금 넘었지만, 이제는 향후 몇십 년 후에 다시금 이전의 시대로 회귀할 것이라는 소식이 빈번히 들려온다. 이미 엄습한 저출산과 초고령화 상황은 사회, 경제적으로 많은 변화의 분위기를 양산하고 있으나 개선될 가능성은 좀처럼 보이지 않는다. 본 논고는 결혼과 출산 기피 현상으로 점철된 우리나라의 상황을 분석하는 데에서 시작된다. 그리고 이보다 더 극단적인 경향을 드러내는 ‘반출생주의’에 대해서 다루는데, 남아프리카공화국의 데이비드 베너타가 주장하는 주요 논거들을 분석하고 이를 조직신학적 관점에서 비판하고자 한다. 그 중심에는 고통에 대한 몰이해와 인간 존재에 대한 비관주의적, 허무주의적 사유가 자리하고 있다. ‘몸의 신학’을 통해 인간 존재의 의미와 생명의 전달에 관하여 역설했던 요한 바오로 2세 교황의 신학적 논증은 반출생주의의 오류와 허점을 드러나게 할 것이다.

영문 초록

One of the phrases that sums up the state of affairs in Korea is “a nation where babies are not born.” It has only been just half a century since our remarkable industrialization; however, we are now frequently told that in the next few decades, we will revert back to the old ways of life. The already staggering decline in birthrate and super-aged population is creating a climate of social and economic change that is unlikely to improve. This paper begins by analyzing the situation in this country, which is characterized by the aversion towards marriage and childbearing, and then addresses the more extreme trend of “antinatalism,” analyzing the main ideas of South African philosopher David Benatar and critiquing them from a systematic theological perspective. At the center of this view lies a pessimistic and nihilistic view of human existence, with a lack of understanding on human suffering. The theological arguments of Pope John Paul II, who expounded on the meaning of human existence and the transmission of life through the theology of the body, is used to expose the errors and weaknesses of antinatalism.
