내러티브 탐구는 한국어 교육에서 개인적 경험을 사회적·문화적·역사적 맥락에서 심층적으로 이해하고, 연구의 통찰력을 강화한 방법론적 가치가 있는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구는 다음 두 가지 연구 문제를 중심으로 이루어졌다. 첫째, 한국어 교육 분야에서 내러티브 탐구가 시기별로 어떠한 특징을 보이는지를 살펴보았다. 둘째, 내러티브 탐구를 통해 한국어 교육에서 어떠한 연구 주제가 진행되었는지를 확인하였다. 이러한 연구 문제를 바탕으로 18년간의 학술지와 학위논문의 주제를 분석하여, 한국어 교육 연구자들이 중점적으로 다룬 관심사와 변화를 파악하였다. 또한 이를 기반으로 향후 한국어 교육 연구의 방향성을 제안하였다. 분석 결과, 내러티브 탐구는 2010년대부터 본격적으로 시작되었으며, 특히 2014년 이후 다문화 사회의 확산과 질적 연구의 필요성에 따라 연구가 급격히 증가하였다. 주요 연구 주제는 학습자와 교수자 경험(51%), 정체성(14%), 적응(11%) 등이었으며, 이 외에도 진로 탐색, 학습 동기, 평생학습, 교육 방안 등 다양한 주제를 포함하였다. 그중에서도 직업 및 진로 탐색이 최근 두드러지게 나타난 점은 주목할 만하다. 연구 참여자는 유학생(31%), 교사(27%), 결혼이주여성(17%)이 주를 이루었으며, 이들의 언어·문화 적응 및 정체성 형성을 심층적으로 분석함으로써 한국 사회의 다문화적 구조와 통합 가능성을 조명하는 데 기여하였다. 본 연구는 내러티브 탐구를 활용한 한국어 교육 연구 설계와 주제 선정에 유용한 지침을 제공한다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 그러나 국내 중심으로 연구의 흐름을 분석하였기 때문에, 국제적 비교와 한국어 교육의 글로벌 적용성에 관한 탐구가 부족하다는 한계를 가진다. 이에 따라 후속 연구에서는 다양한 다문화 사회와의 비교를 통해 한국어 교육의 독창성과 글로벌 적용 가능성을 탐구할 것을 제언한다.

영문 초록

Narrative inquiry is acknowledged for its methodological value in deeply understanding personal experiences within social, cultural, and historical contexts, thereby enriching the depth and insights of academic studies. This study focuses on two main questions. First, it examines the temporal characteristics of narrative inquiry in the field of Korean language education. Second, it explores the topics that have been studied through narrative inquiry in this domain. Based on these research questions, this study analyzes the themes of academic journal articles and dissertations over the past 18 years to identify the key areas of interest and shifts in focus among scholars in Korean language education. It also suggests directions for future studies in the field. The analysis reveals that narrative inquiry began to gain significant attention in the 2010s, with a sharp increase in studies after 2014, influenced by the expansion of multicultural society and the growing emphasis on qualitative methodologies. Major topics include learner and teacher experiences (51%), identity (14%), and adaptation (11%). Additionally, other themes such as career exploration, learning motivation, lifelong learning, and educational strategies were identified, with career and job exploration emerging as a particularly prominent focus in recent years. The study participants were mainly international students (31%), teachers (27%), and marriage migrant women (17%). By analyzing their linguistic and cultural adaptation processes and identity formation, this study sheds light on the multicultural structure of Korean society and its potential for social integration. This study is significant in that it provides practical guidelines for designing studies and selecting topics in Korean language education using narrative inquiry. However, it has limitations as it predominantly focuses on domestic trends, lacking exploration of international comparisons and the global applicability of Korean language education. Future studies are encouraged to investigate the uniqueness and global applicability of Korean language education through comparative analyses with various multicultural societies.
