중세 이탈리아 대학과 조선시대 서원 비교 연구 - 아레초대학 규정과 이산서원 원규를 중심으로

국문 초록

본 논문의 목적은 중세 유럽의 대학과 동아시아의 서원이 시공간적 차이에도 불구하고 교육기관으로서 일정한 유사성을 지니고 있음에 주목하여 중세이탈리아, 나아가 중세 유럽의 대학과 조선시대 서원 사이의 구체적 사례연구의 가능성을 가늠해 보고자 하는 것이다. 특히 교육기관의 공식 규정이 각 기관의 구성 및 운영을 충실히 반영한다는 측면에 주목하여 구체적인 사례연구의 대상으로 13세기 초에 설립된 아레초대학의 규정과 1558년 건립된 이산서원의 원규를 설정하고 이를 상호 비교, 분석하였다. 이를 통해 전혀 다른 문화적 맥락 속에서 탄생한 대학과 서원간의 구체적인 공통점과 차이점을 확인할수 있었다. 대학과 서원의 인적 구성은 관리책임자, 학생, 지원인력으로 유사점이 두드러지지만, 각 기관의 역사적 맥락에 따라 세부 항목에서는 차이점을발견할 수 있었다. 또 다른 공통점은 바로 구성원들간의 관계에 대한 부분으로, 학문의 공간이라는 특성에서 비롯한 상호 존중 및 공경에 대한 강조를 공히 찾아볼 수 있었다. 다른 한편으로 경제적인 측면과 관련된 조항에서는 차이점이 나타난다. 아레초대학의 경우 각종 위반 사항에 대한 벌금과 수업료징수에 대한 규정이 명시되어 있지만 ｢이산원규｣에서는 금전적 측면과 관련된 직접적인 언급을 발견할 수 없다. 이는 양 교육기관의 시설 및 운영 형태의차이에 따른 차이로 해석할 수 있다. 이와 같은 차이점에도 불구하고 규정의전반적인 구성을 통해 볼 때 아레초대학 규정과 이산서원 원규에서는 양 기관의 교육적 목적이 잘 드러나고 있음이 확인된다.

영문 초록

This article seeks to examine the potential for specific case studies that compare medieval European universities with Seowon of the Joseon Dynasty, emphasizing that despite temporal and spatial disparities, these institutions share certain educational similarities. This study examines how the official regulations of educational institutions reflect their structure and operation by analyzing the Statuti of the Medieval University of Arezzo, established in the early 13th century, alongside the regulations of Isan Seowon of Joseon, founded in 1559. The analysis identifies specific similarities and differences between these institutions, which originated in entirely disparate cultural contexts. Both institutions feature similar compositions, including administrators, students, and support staff. However, there are variations in the detailed aspects of these compositions according to their historical contexts. A further point of similarity is the emphasis on mutual respect and honor among members, which derives from the institutions' role as spaces for learning. However, there are notable differences in economic provisions. The University of Arezzo's regulations include specific penalties for various infractions and procedures for tuition collection, while the Isan Seowon regulations lack direct references to financial issues. This discrepancy is attributed to differences in the facilities and operational forms of the two educational settings. Nevertheless, the overall framework of the regulations clearly articulates the educational objectives of both the University of Arezzo and Isan Seowon.
