국문 초록

우리의 삶은 앎을 통하여 이루어지며, 좋은 삶(the good life)과 좋은 세상을 이루어가는 힘은 하늘에서 그 의미를 구하고, 현실에서 실천해가는 과정을 통하여 체득하는 것이다. 그것은 덕(德)이라는 철학적 개념을 내면화하고 행동하는 과정에서 이루어간다. 하늘의 뜻을 땅위에서(天高地卑) 실현하기 위하여 인간은 자기 수양을 통하여 군자가 되는 길(道)을 갈고 닦아가는 자기 수양을 통하여 덕을 갖춘다. 이는 좋은 삶 즉 길(吉)한 삶을 얻어가는 것이다. 하늘이 가르쳐주는 것은 우주의 대원칙과 작용(理와 氣)을 통하여 음양의 변화, 오행의 작용을 통하여 천지의 뜻(天地之心)을 이어간다. 그것이 원형리정(元亨理貞)의 변화의 단위를 통하여 四德은 땅위에서의 삶을 이끌어 주고, 이를 표현하는 것이 시간적 공간적 개념이다. 땅위에서의 실천적 덕목으로서 인의예지(仁義禮智)의 삶이 좋은 삶과 좋은 세상을 이룩해가는 실천적 개념이다. 하늘이 인간에게 주는 덕(天德) 중에서 특히 주역『周易』이 주는 교훈이 지산겸괘(地山謙卦)에서 표현되고 얻어지는 것이다. 크게 소유한 사람은 겸손한 마음을 가져야 좋은 삶을 이어갈 수 있고, 좋은 세상을 이루어 갈 수 있다고 보는 것이다. 겸손하게 행동해야 할 때이며, 하늘은 인간세상에서 겸덕으로서 그리고 그 德으로 현실에서의 삶을 살아갈 것을 일러준다. 각기 상황에 따라서 좋은 삶을 위한 길(道)로 여섯 효(爻)를 제시한다. 어떤 상황에서나 겸손한 마음으로 살아가라는 것은 지산겸괘의 가르침이다. 이를 실천하는 길이 개인적인 행복과 국가적 공동체를 통하여 이루어진다는 것을 겸덕(謙德)은 일깨워준다.

영문 초록

The aim of our life is to search for the good life and world. The I Ching teaches us the virtue of modesty. The mind of Heaven and Earth has four characteristics: origination, flourishing, benefiting, and firmness; origination runs throughout all. As they move in rotation, we have the cycle of spring, summer, fall, and winter, and the generative force of spring runs throughout all. These four agents are the virtue of Heaven. Put concretely, life on Earth is the practice of our life. The symbol of the Humility Hexagram indicates progress and success. The superior man (being humble, as it implies), will have a good issue and to the undertaking. The way of Heaven is that the energy of heaven goes down. The way of Earth goes up from the bottom. It is the way of men to hate the full and love the humble. First Yin is the superior man who adds modesty and modesty. It is important that one cultivates his virtue in lowering himself. The Second Yin is modesty. The third Yang has rendered distinguished services to the nation, but he behaves modestly. The superior man will have good results for his undertakings. The fourth Yin widely practices the virtue of modesty. There is nothing unfavorable. As he follows the right path, there will be good fortune; a good result for one's undertakings. The fifth Yin does not keep property to himself, but shares it with his neighbors. Lowliness is a quality of the earth: this is the very reason why it appears in this Hexagram as exalted by being placed above the mountain. This shows modesty. Gaining the virtue of modesty in his personality is the key to a good life.
