국문 초록

꼬뜨(Co Tu)족은 베트남 중부와 라오스 동부 일부 지역에 거주하는 종족이다. 라오스의 꼬투족 수는 베트남의 3분의 1에 불과하며, 대부분은 베트남의 Thua Thjen Hue, Quang Nam 및 Kontum 지방에서 거주한다. 사용하는 언어는 몬크메르語이다. 그들은 Kha tu, Ka tu, K’ tu 등으록도 알려져 있지만, 공식적으록는 Co Tu(강 상류 근처에 사는 사람들이라는 뜻)라고 칭한다. 꼬뜨 사람들은 대개 해발 500∼1000미터의 산악 지역과 중부 지역에 흩어져 살고 있다. 과거에는 주로 야생동물을 사냥하고, 과일을 채취하고, 벼, 고구마, 카사바 등을 재배하였다. 그러나 야생동물이 점점 드물어지고 있어 현재는 주로 가축과 가금류를 식용으로 사육하고 있다. 꼬뜨 사람들은 기본적인 생활을 영위하는데 자연에 크게 의존하며, 자연히 산의 신, 강의 신인 ‘Giang’이라는 요정을 믿는다. 그들은 수백 년 된 전통을 이어가고 있으며, 자신들의 언어나 고유한 생활방식, 의례, 전통 의상과 다양한 요리 및 음료를 보존해왔다. 꼬뜨족에게 없어서는 안 될 음료 증 하나는 술이다. 일상적인 식사때뿐만 아니라 신을 숭배하고, ‘물소 찌르기’ 의식에서 햅쌀로 빚은 술로 축하 의식을 치르고, 죽은 사람에게 공양하는 등 특별한 행사에도 등장한다. 특히 Ta-Vat(야자나무과에 속하는 나무)라고도 알려진 tr’ din이라는 일종의 나무로 만들어진다. 꼬또 사람들은 이 술을 ‘천국의 술’이라고 부른다.

영문 초록

Co Tu ethnic groups live mainly in some provinces of Central Viet Nam and eastern Laos. However the number of Co Tu people in Laos is only one third of in Vietnam. Within Vietnam most of them live in the provinces of Thua Thien Hue, Quang Nam and Kontum. They speak a MonKhmer language. They are also known as Kha tu, Ka tu, K' tu, etc. Co Tu (people living near river upstream) is the officially-recognized name. Co Tu people scatters over mountainous regions and midlands which is 500 - 1000 meters above sea level. In the past, they mostly hunted wild animals, gathered fruits and cultivated rice, sweet potato, cassava, etc. However, wild animals are increasing rare, hence nowadays they mainly raise livestock and poultry for food. Because Co Tu people are highly dependent on nature for their basic human needs, they believe in and worship the Mountain God, River God and their Genie called Giang. They embrace centuries-old traditions and have preserved their own language, unique means of survival, ceremonial rituals, traditional costume and various cuisine and beverage. An indispensable drink of Co Tu people is typical alcohol associated with their daily life. Not only in the daily meals but also in special occasions such as worshiping the gods, celebrating new rice in the buffalo stabbing ceremony, offering to the dead people.etc. Especially this alcohol comes from nature. It is made from a type of tree: tr'din, also known as Ta - Vat (a tree belonging to the palm family). Co Tu people call it alcohol of Heaven.
