The period from the late 1960‘s to the mid 1970’s was particularly rich time for American cinematographers who were called upon to help a new generation of directors explore different ways of visualizing film genres. Among the most Prestigious who emerged during that era was Conrad Hall, who has died on January 4. He earned nine Academy Award nominations during his career. He also won Oscar twice, in 1969 for Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid, and in 2000 for American Beauty. He left Hollywood for over a decade after 1976‘s Marathon Man. He strove to avoid the artificial “Hollywood look” until that. He returned to feature filmmaking in 1987 with Black Widow. His willingness to take risks resulted in a rich cornucopia of cinematic triumphs. With Searching for Bobby Fischer(1993), he showed magic naturalism. The magic consisted of stylistic touches to heighten the atmosphere. he thought it was one of his best visual jobs. In both American Beauty(2000) and Road to perdition(2002), he showed naturalistic realism with beauty of contrast. He believed that filmmaking is about finding things out, it's about examining, and it's about discovering. Throughout His brilliant career behind the camera, he had a keen eye for “Happy accident and Magic moment” as he called. His greatest images will be both timeless and sublime. The images illustrated his journey into the darker recesses of the human psyche, a personal journey that will serve as a roadmap for current and future cinematographers. His cinematography has always been daring, edgy and sensuous in a way. Over the course of his career he had both a personal and professional impact on other cinematographers. But he spoke of his work not just in term of the camera or light, but in terms of drama and character. If we scratch him deep enough and we will find him as a director.
