국문 초록

본 고에서는 1960년 후반 중 문화 전반을 휩쓸었던 ‘에로티시즘’ 열풍의 한가운데에서 그동안 제로 규명되지 못했던 1960년 후반 한국 화의 변화 와 정체성 모색의 일면을 파악하고자 당 ‘시네 에로티시즘’에 초점을 맞추었다. 정부의 무정견한 검열을 꾸짖고 바로잡을 기세로 강경한 윤리적 입장을 고수하 던 지식인들이 <내시>와 <벽 속의 여자>와 같은 화를 문제 삼으면서 화계는 ‘시네 에로티시즘’을 둘러싼 논란에 휩싸다. 상업성과 예술성을 겸비해야 하는 화의 특성상 ‘에로티시즘’은 화에 표현될 수밖에 없는 본질적인 것이었으나, 당국의 정책과 지식인들의 강경한 비판 가운데에서 화는 ‘예술’도, ‘상업’도 아 닌, 그저 저질의 알맹이 없는 선동적 표현물로 전락하기에 이르렀다. 그러나 ‘에 로티시즘’을 표현한 화에 한 강경한 처벌과 제도 마련에 의해 ‘예술’ 자체가 위협받자 문화 예술계를 중심으로 ‘예술’과 ‘외설’의 문제가 비로소 담론의 장으 로 떠오르는 계기가 마련된 것은 생산적인 것이기도 했다. 문화적 환경은 매우 척박했지만, 그 상황에서 비로소 ‘예술’과 ‘외설’에 한 인식이 싹트고 화계는 ‘예술’과 ‘외설’의 경계를 정립하고 한국 화의 정체성을 구현하는 문제로까지 인식의 확장을 가져올 수 있었던 것이다. 화계는 당 유행하던 ‘에로티시즘’을 수용함과 동시에 안방 극장의 TV와는 차별화된 화만의 새로운 무엇을 보여 주 면서 상업성과 예술성을 겸비해 나가야 했다. 화 <내시>를 비롯한 일련의 에로 티시즘을 표방한 화들이 신체를 에로틱하게 보여 줌으로써, 안방극장을 석권한 스토리 중심의 드라마와는 차별화된 형 스크린의 장면을 최한 활용한 것도 이와 같은 맥락에서 비롯되었다. 화는 스토리보다는 형 스크린의 여러 장면 을 통해 신체를 에로틱하게 전시하면서 중의 시청각적 흥미와 쾌락을 최한 끌어 올리기 위해 노력했다. 이를 통해 당시 한국 화는 중 매체로서의 생존 위기를 타개하고 예술로서 자리매김하기 위한 자구책을 마련했던 것이다.

영문 초록

This study set out to investigate the changes and identity of Korean cinema in the second half of the 1960s as they were not fully examined in the middle of “eroticism” fever that swept over the entire popular culture during the period, focusing on “cinematic eroticism” of the times. As the intellectuals, who used to maintain a strict ethical position with such force to criticize and correct the inconsistent censorship of the government, started to raise issues with movies like The Eunuchs and The Lady in the Wall, the Korean movie circles were caught in the controversy of “cinematic eroticism.” Given the characteristics of movies that should satisfy both commercial viability and artistic value, “eroticism” was something essential that could not help being expressed in movies. Being bombarded with the harsh criticisms of intellectuals as well as the government policies, however, movies degenerated to low quality propaganda expressions with no kernel that were neither “art” nor “commerce.” As “art” itself was threatened by the strict punishments and institutions for the movies that expressed “eroticism,” however, the issue of “art” and “pornography” finally emerged to the venue of discourse around the cultural and artistic circles, which was a productive result. The cultural environment was extremely poor, but the movie circles were able to have budding perceptions of “art” and “pornography,” establish the boundary between “art” and “pornography,” and expand their perceptions to the issue of manifesting the identity of Korean cinema. They had to pursue and satisfy both commercial viability and artistic value by accepting “eroticism,” which was in vogue those days, and, at the same time, showing something new of their own differentiated from TV, the home theater. A series of movies that claimed to advocate eroticism including The Eunuchs depicted the body in an erotic fashion and made utmost use of the large screen scenes differentiated from story-based dramas that dominated the home theater, which is understood in the same context. Such movies tried to stimulate the audiovisual interest and pleasure of the public as much as possible by displaying the body erotically in many scenes on the large screen rather than focusing on the stories. Employing those approaches, the Korean cinema of the time resolved its survival crisis as a mass medium and made plans to save itself and settle down as art.
