이 글은 재연(reenactment) 양식을 사용한 최근 한국 다큐멘터리의 경향을 살펴보고, 재연 개념을 새롭게 정의하면서 재연이 포스트모던 시대의 대안적인 역사 쓰기가 될 수 있는지를 탐구하고자 한다. 디지털화로 지시대상과의 인과적 관계를 보증했던 지표적 연결고리가 약화되고 선형적 서사가 파편화된 복잡서사로대체되면서, 동시대 다큐멘터리에서 점차 재연을 포함한 여러 방식의 표현적이고극화된 양식의 사용이 증가하고 있다. 이와 같은 다큐멘터리에서 재연 사용의 증가는 세계적인 현상이다. 미국과 유럽에서는 1990년대 중반부터 픽션과 논픽션사이의 경계가 흐려지는 양상에 대해 논하기 시작했으며, 한국에서는 특히 2000 년대 후반부터 다양한 양식과 목적을 갖고 부쩍 재연 사용이 늘어났다. 본 글에서는 역사의 반복 문제와 관련해 전 세계적인 현상으로서 다큐멘터리 재연 사용이 증가하는 현상을 논할 뿐만 아니라 왜 특히 한국에서 최근 3-4년 사이 재연사용이 늘어나게 되었는지 한국의 역사⋅정치적 맥락에서 검토할 것이다. 특히최근 다큐멘터리 재연 사용으로 주목을 받은 <만신>(박찬경, 2013)과 <거미의땅>(김동령, 박경태, 2013)을 집중적으로 분석한다. 그에 앞서 역사가 반복된다는것이 어떻게 대표성/재현가능성과 연관되는지와 다큐멘터리에서 재연 사용의 역사를 살펴본다.

영문 초록

This paper examines a new way of historiography in two recent South Korean independent documentaries in which reenactment plays a vital role: MANSHIN: Ten Thousand Spirits (2013) and Tour of Duty (2013). Korean independent documentary, which was more or less dominated by an observational style of vérité or direct cinema, increasingly tends, since the 2010s, to use reenactment which authentically recreates or reconstructs prior events. These new documentaries are closely related not only to the blurred boundary between fiction and non-fiction and the forfeiture of an indexical link between image and historical occurrence but also to a repetition of history itself which, as Karl Marx once, said “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” This paper thus suggests that reenactment in the two South Korean documentary films is not simply a style or mode but an alternative way of historiography which revives historicity and tries to touch a time in history by overlapping past and present or even future in a fold of time. These two documentaries which I examine do not have a realist desire to identically describe a historical event or make up a loss, but try to come close to the event metonymically. It is rather an activity of bodily translation, embodiment or re-affection, that is, an invitation to history. Reenactment in those films also asks not what is missing or how identical it is but what still remains. Lastly, I explore here the possibility of a historical future through documentary reenactment by following not Marx but Gilles Delueze who insists that history repeats itself three times, first as a tragedy, second as a farce, third as creation.
