국문 초록

본고는 영화 <옥자>(2017, 봉준호)를 통해 전지구적 보편성에 차이와 틈을 만들어내고 있는 트랜스내셔널 시네마의 문화번역과 혼종성을 연구하고자 한다. 동질화가 불가능한, 등가물 없는 겹침 즉 문화번역을 통해 위치적 관계 속에서 끊임없이 재구성되는 “새로운 혼종적이고 전환적인 정체성”의 ‘과정 중’의 트랜스내셔널 시네마를 발견하고자 한다. 구체적 내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, ‘상상된 강원도 산골’이라는 비장소적 공간은 서사 전반에 걸친 의도된오역과 함께 오어법적 역전으로 작동, 담론상의 저항적 공간을 생성하였다. 둘째, 일제 강점기와 독재체제 하의 폭압적 근대화, 그리고 신자유주의 체제로 이어지는 좌절된 근대성은 개인적 차원에 머무르는 이율배반적인 영웅들과 탈구하는내러티브, 즉 시간 지연의 슬로우 모션과 패배주의적인 엔딩을 가져왔다. 셋째, 조니 박사의 자기연민의 1인칭 독백 그리고 사실상 보이스오버 내레이션의 기능을 하는 제이의 대사는 한국의 구술문화 즉 판소리와 변사 연행의 자장 안에 위치하고 있다. 이상과 같은 한국의 특정성들이 문화번역 과정을 통해 영화 텍스트에 갈등적으로 존재하고 이런 갈등적 겹침은 양가적이고 혼종적인 저항의 순간을 만들고 있다는 것이 본고의 주장이다. 이러한 논의를 전개해나갈 방법론으로는 호미 바바의 ‘혼종성’ 개념을 가져왔다. 바바는 양가성과 혼종성의 개념을 통해 피지배자가 식민권력의 일방적 지배에 저항할 수 있다고 주장한다. 그에 따르면, “혼종성은 식민 주체의 통일성을 불가능하게 하고, 식민 주체의 분열을 야기한다. 문화번역 과정을 통해 이질적인 문화적 요소들이 들어오고 이때 발생하는 번역 불가능한 요소들이 갈등적으로 존재하게 된다. 바바는 이런 갈등적 겹침의 문화현상에서 양가적 저항이 가능하다” 고 주장한다. 본고는 호미 바바의 ‘혼종성’ 개념을 통해, 갈등하고 협상하고 유동하는 트랜스내셔널 시네마에 다가가고자 한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to study the cultural translation and hybridity of transnational cinema, which creates differences and gaps in global universality through the analysis of director Joon-ho Bong’s 2017 film Okja. I try to explore the concept of transnational cinema as the process of a “new hybrid and transformative identity,” which is constantly reconstructed in a positional relationship through cultural translation and thus is impossible to homogenize and overlap without equivalence. The specific details are as follows. First, the non-spatial space of ‘Imagined Gangwon-do Mountain Valley’ works as a reversal of the catachresis along with the intended misinterpretation throughout the narrative, creating a space of resistance in discourse. Second, the frustrated modernity under the Japanese colonial period and the oppressive modernization under the dictatorship and the neoliberal system result in antagonism heroes staying at the individual level and a narrative of dislocation, in other words, a slow-motion as time delay and a defeatist ending. Third, Dr. Johnny’s first-person monologue of self-pity and Jay’s lines, which function as voice-over narrations, are located in the magnetic field of Korean oral culture, namely, pansori and the silent-film narrator performance. This paper argues that the specificities of Korea as described above exist in conflict with the film text by the cultural translation and that the conflicting overlap creates an ambivalent and hybrid moment of resistance. Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of ‘hybridity’ is helpful to develop my argument. Bhabha argues that the concept of ambivalence and hybridity allows the ruled to resist the unilateral rule of colonial power. According to him, “hybridity makes the unity of the colonial subject impossible, and causes the division of the colonial subject.” Cultural translation bringing heterogeneous cultural elements generates untranslatable elements which conflict with the culture of one’s own country. Bhabha argues that ambivalent resistance is possible in this cultural phenomenon of conflicting overlap.” Through Homi K. Bhabha’s concept of ‘hybridity’, this paper attempts to approach a transnational cinema that conflicts and negotiates, and flows.
