봉준호 영화의 장르 연구

국문 초록

2019년은 한국영화사 100주년의 해였다. 한국영화는 지난 20여 년간 산업적으로괄목할만한 성장을 이루었고, 국제적으로도 널리 알려졌다. 할리우드를 모델로 한국영화 산업이 전개되면서, 한국영화 흥행의 중심에 할리우드 장르의 영향을 받은영화가 자리하게 되었다. 그 결과 2000년대에는 흥행에도 성공하고 작품으로도평가를 받은 감독 대다수가 장르의 활용을 통해 두 마리 토끼를 잡을 수 있었다. 본 연구에서는 그 가운데 가장 대표적인 사례라고 할 수 있는 봉준호 영화를<살인의 추억>(2003)과 <괴물>(2006)을 중심으로 살펴보려고 한다. 장르 영화는대중에게 어필해서 흥행에 성공하는 것을 목표로 하기에, 보수적인 속성을 갖기마련이다. 범죄 또는 괴물에 의해 정상적인 사회질서가 교란되는 형사영화와 괴수영화 장르의 경우, 주인공은 결국 문제를 일으킨 원인을 제거한다. 그럼으로써범죄자와 괴물의 위협은 비록 일시적이라고 해도 결말에서는 해소되고 사회는정상 상태로 복원된다. 그러나 <살인의 추억>과 <괴물>의 주인공은 끝내 목표를이루지 못하고 실패하는 결말에 이른다. 두 편 모두 장르 영화인데도 불구하고사회질서의 복원에 회의적인 태도를 드러낸다. 이와 더불어 장르의 컨벤션에서벗어난 지점들이 텍스트의 징후라고 한다면, 권위주의 정권 시대의 한국사회 뿐만 아니라 2000년대 한국사회의 정치적 무의식이 작용한 결과라고 할 수 있다. 이렇게 봉준호 영화는 장르의 외피 아래 텍스트의 징후를 통해 역사의 실재를 드러낸다. 이것은 역사적 필연에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 무의식에서 의식으로, 내포적인 것에서 명시적인 것으로 이행한 결과이다. 프레드릭 제임슨이 문학을 현대사회의 가장 중요한 매개 형식으로 중요시했다면, 봉준호 영화는 한국사회의 정치적 무의식을 드러내는 중요한 매개 형식으로서 중요하다고 할 수 있다. 다시 말해서, 봉준호는 장르를 활용함으로써 할리우드 영화에 익숙한 관객들과 해외 영화관계자들이 그의 영화를 친숙하게 접근할 수 있는 ‘대중성’을 확보했다. 다른 한편으로는 장르의 변형과 텍스트의 징후를 통해, 1980년대 이후2000년대 한국사회의 정치적 무의식을 담지해냈다. 장르의 활용과 한국사회를 바라보는 역사적인 관점을 통해, 봉준호 영화는 흥행 성공과 작품의 평가라는 대대적인 성과를 이루었다. 그럼으로써 2000년대 한국영화의 양적, 질적 성공에 크게기여했다고 평가할 수 있다.

영문 초록

2019 was the 100th anniversary of the history of Korean cinema. Korean films have achieved remarkable industrial growth over the past 20 years, and are widely known internationally. As the Korean film industry developed with Hollywood as a model, films influenced by the Hollywood genre were placed at the center of the box office success of Korean films. As a result, in the 2000s, most of the directors who were successful at the box office and were evaluated for their work were able to catch two rabbits by utilizing the genre. In this study, I try to examine Bong Joon-ho’s films, which can be said to be the most representative examples, focusing on Memories of Murder(2003) and The Host(2006). Genre films tend to have conservative attributes as they aim to appeal to the public and succeed at the box office. In the case of detective films and monster films in which normal social order is disturbed by crimes or monsters, the protagonist eventually eliminates the cause of the problem. In this way, the threat of criminals and monsters, albeit temporary, is resolved in the end and society is restored to a normal state. However, the protagonists of Memories of Murder and The Host do not achieve their goals and end in failure. Although both films are genre films, they are skeptical about the restoration of social order. In addition, if the points that deviated from the convention of the genre are a symptom of the text, it can be said that it is the result of the political unconscious of the Korean society in the 2000s as well as the Korean society in the era of authoritarian regimes. In this way, Bong Joon-ho’s films reveal the reality of history through the signs of text under the cover of genre. This is the result of the transition from the unconscious to the conscious and from the implicit to the explicit based on the understanding of historical necessity. If Frederick Jameson valued literature as the most important form of mediation in modern society, Bong Joon-ho’s films can be said to be important as an mediating form that reveals the political unconscious of Korean society. In other words, by using genres, Bong Joon-ho has secured ‘popularity’ so that audiences familiar with Hollywood films and foreign film officials can approach his films in a familiar way. On the other hand, through the transformation of the genre and the symptoms of the text, the political unconscious of Korean society from the 1980s to the 2000s was supported. Through the use of genres and historical perspectives on Korean society, Bong Joon-Ho's films achieved great success in terms of box office success and evaluation of the work. In this way, it can be evaluated that it greatly contributed to the quantitative and qualitative success of Korean films in the 2000s.
