영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to observe the dual aspect of languages as both substance and medium, and also to find the direction of Korean language education focusing on the fact that contemporary human beings are situated within the boundaries of reality and cyber-reality. This investigation began by inquiring into Vygotsky's ‘self-referential' notion of ‘private speech' and through this will understand the significance of languages as both substance/medium. This will help us find a direction for Korean language education in this cyber-age and will also help us develop an appropriate pedagogy. Furthermore, the relationship between contemporary science, traditional Korean thought (for example, the philosophy of Won-Hyo, Sam-Tae-Guk and Yul-Gok) and the dual aspect of languages as both substance and medium will be investigated. It will be concluded that the search for Korean language education as a second language is not one that will merely duplicate the language education theories of the occident, but must be an opportunity to rediscover the potentialities within Korean tradition. Also, it will be stated that the potentialities of the Korean tradition can contribute globally only when it is based on scientific inquiry.
