Vertical Integration and Its Performance: An Empirical Analysis on Korean Listed Corporations

국문 초록

본 연구는 수직결합 정도가 기업의 성과에 미치는 영향에 대해 실증적 분석을 시도한다. 수직 결합은 시장을 이용함에 따른 거래비용, 예를 들어 탐색비용, 거래 및 계약 비용을 제거할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 거래기업 간의 자산의 특이성에 의해 나타나는 기회주의적 행동과 이것에 의해 발생하는 비용을 절감할 수 있다는데 의의가 있으며, 따라서 기업의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미친다고 주장한다. 이를 위하여 금융위기 이전의 상장회사의 자료를 대상으로 분석하였다. 그 이유로는 한국의 기업의 조직구조가 IMF 관리체제하에서 타의에 의한 기업조직구조변경이 이루지기 전에, 재벌뿐만 아니라 일반 상장기업들의 자생적인 기업수직결합이 기업성과에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는지를 분석을 하기 위해서이다. 이러한 분석은 처음 시도되는 것으로 그 결과는 일반적인 기대와 달리 한 기업 내의 수직 결합 정도가 높을수록 기업의 성과에 부(負)의 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 재벌그룹내의 수직적 결합관련은 기업성과와 아무런 관련이 없는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

Firms or internal exchanges exist to eliminate or at least reduce transaction costs from the separating process in many firms by dealing more efficiently with bounded rationality, complexity, and tendency towards opportunism faced by the markets so that vertical integration is supposed to have a positive relationship with performance. The organizational structure of Korean economy in the latter part of the 20th century is much related with this transaction costs' view. I propose to estimate the effect of vertical integration on the firm’s performance using the data of the Korean listed corporations from 1991 to 1995, therefore. The estimated results show that vertical integration at firm level is negatively and significantly related with the firm’s performance: the higher level of vertical integration the worse performance. However, the group level integration is not related with performance at all.
