An Analysis on the Growth Effect of Structural Change in the African Countries

국문 초록

이 연구는 구조적 변화과정과 무역 혹은 인적자본과의 상호작용이 아프리카 국가들의 성장에미치는 장∙단기적 효과를 분석한다. 이 연구는 VECM모형을 기반으로1992년-2016년 기간동안 6개의 아프리카 국가, 즉 코트디부아르, 에티오피아, 가나, 모로코, 튀니지, 탄자니아 등을 분석한다. 이를 위해 이 논문은 구조조정과 성장 간의 연계에 관한 이론적 및 실증적 문헌의 배경을 설명하고 필립-페론 단위근 검정과 요한센의 공적분 검정 방법을 적용한다. 요한센 공적분 검정 결과는 모든 대상 아프리카 국가에서 구조변화와 1인당 경제성장률 간 장기적 공적분관계를 갖고 있음을 보이고 있다. VECM 추정결과는 가나와 탄자니아의 경우 양의단기적 관계를 갖고 있으나 모로코의 경우 음의 단기적 관계를 갖고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 무역개방과 인적자본은 직접적으로 혹은 구조변화 촉진을 통해 간접적으로 1인당 경제성장률에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

영문 초록

This study is engaged in highlighting the long run and the short run contribution of structural change processes and their interaction with trade and human capital to the economic growth of African countries. This paper analyzes six economies, namely, Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Morocco, Tunisia and Tanzania over the period 1992-2016, employing vector error correction models. To do so, we describe theoretical backgrounds of the structural change and economic growth link and perform Phillips-Perron unit root tests and Johansen cointegration tests for the variables. Johansen cointegration test results indicate that for all the countries, structural change is found to have long-run relationship with real per capita economic growth. The VECM estimated results show that structural change has positive short-run effects for both Ghana and Tanzania, while structural change has negative effects for Morocco. The empirical results also show that trade openness and human capital can directly influence real per capita GDP growth and indirectly through structural change, depending on the countries.
