국문 초록

오늘의 지구위기를 지구 시스템 과학은 지구가 죽어가기보다는 잠에서 깨어나 “화를 내고”, “격노하며” “복수심에 찬” 반격을 가하고 있다는 사실을 통해 설명한다. 지구에서 인류가 사라질 수도 있는 기후열화, 종 다양성의 파괴와 멸종위기 등 미증유의 지구균열 현상을 바라보며 인간은 자신의 정체성과 지구생명공동체에 대한 사명이 무엇인지 숙고하고 즉시 행동하지 않을 수 없다. 인간 종을 우주와 지구가 오랜 진화를 통해 탄생시킨 존재라는 사실을 우리가 인정한다면 그리고 이런 위기의 원인이 인간에게 있다면, 인간은 지구생명체에 대한 도덕적, 법적 책임을 지지 않을 수 없다. 이 논문에서 나는 지구가 바야흐로 ‘인류세’라는 위기의 시대를 겪고 있음을 전제하고 인간중심주의를 탈피하면서도 인간의 책임성을 강조하는 해밀턴의 지구시스템 과학과 신인간중심주의를 살피고 그 한계를 비판적으로 평가한다. 다음으로 해밀턴은 지구와 인간, 두 개의 힘을 이원론적으로 본 것과 대조적으로 양자를 일원론적으로 파악하려는 토마스 베리의 모델을 살핀다. 그런 다음 본격적으로 나는 토마스 베리의 종교와 과학, 동양과 서양의 종교적 계시체험의 소통의 장으로서 생태영성학을 새로운 분과학문으로 정초하고자 시도한다. 여기서 나는 생태영성학은 학제 간 소통은 물론, 생물종 간과 생물과 무생물 간의 소통이라는 트랜스로그(Translogue)의 방법론을 제시하고 관계 중심적이고 개방적이며 재구성의 공론장의 기본 방향을 제시한다.

영문 초록

Earth system scientists explain today s global ecological crisis through the fact that rather than dying, the Earth is waking up angry, enraged in a vengeful counterattack. Looking at the unprecedented discordances in the earth, such as climate warming, the loss of species diversity, and the threat of human extinction, human beings are forced to reflect on our identity and mission for the global life-community and act immediately. If the human species was born through the long evolution of the universe and humans are part of the cause of this earth crisis, then humans cannot but bear the moral responsibility for life on earth. In this thesis, I first examine Clive Hamilton s dualistic model of the earth-system science in terms of ‘neo-anthropocentrism,’ which stresses the need to break out of our common anthropocentric mentality in what is an ‘Anthropocene’ crisis. In contrast, I next examine Thomas Berry s model, which understands the two forces of earth and human beings monistically. I then propose a new academic field of ‘eco-spirituality’ as a forum for dialogue between religion (Eastern and Western) and the sciences. I present a ‘translogue’ methodology, by which human beings go beyond our common ways of communication and interact with other species on a deeper level. I set up principles for the study of eco-spirituality in open, inter-relational, reconstructive discourse.
