국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 벤자민 워필드(Benjamin B. Warfield, 1851-1921)가 성경과 과학의 관계에 대해서 어떻게 이해했는지 살펴보고, 그러한 입장이 오늘날 개혁신학을 지향하는 그리스도인들에게 어떤 신학적 함의를 주는지 도출하는 데 있다. 워필드의 원칙에 따르면 성경의 무오성을 지지한다고 반드시 성경 본문에서 과학적인 세부사항을 찾아야 하는 것은 아니다. 성경 무오성은 과학 교과서와 같은 정밀함을 요구하지 않고 정확함을 요구한다. 그러므로 성경 본문이 과학 등에 대해 진술할 때, 그것이 실제 어떤 것을 의미하는지 올바른 해석학이 필요해진다. 성경 본문에 대한 해석을 통해, 하나님께서 성경 저자를 통해 하시고자 했던 의미를 찾아야 한다. 이 과정에서 또 다른 중요한 점은 성경 본문의 장르를 이해하는 것이다. 워필드가 장르라는 용어를 직접 사용하지는 않지만 성경의 문체나 어휘, 표현양식, 현상 등의 개념을 통해 워필드는 장르 파악의 중요성을 암시하고 있다. 마지막으로 워필드는 성경 영감에서의 “협력” 개념을 과학에 대한 이해에 적용한다. 성경의 신적 요소와 인간적 요소가 “협력” 개념을 통해 온전히 이해될 수 있듯이, 하나님의 초자연적 능력과 자연세계의 자연적 과정이 협력 과정을 통해 하나님의 목적과 통치에 기여할 수 있다고 보았다. 워필드가 성경과 진화론의 관계에 대해 제시한 입장은 오늘날 우리가 성경과 과학의 관계를 이해하는 데 중요한 원리를 제공한다. 마크 놀의 지적처럼 성경과 진화에 대한 워필드의 입장을 이해하는 것은 오늘날 우리가 신학과 과학 사이의 “훨씬 더 만족할만한 작동관계”를 고려할 수 있음을 보여준다. 필자는 이 논문에서 워필드의 논의를 통해 개혁신학적인 성경론을 고수하면서도 열린 태도로 과학에 접근할 수 있는 가능성을 제시하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to examine how Benjamin B. Warfield understood the relationship between the Bible and science, and to derive what theological implications such a position has for the Reformed theology today. According to Warfield’s principles, supporting the infallibility of the Bible does not necessarily mean that scientific details must be found in the text of the Bible. The infallibility of the Bible doesn’t require the same exactness as science textbooks, but requires accuracy. Therefore, when the Bible text states about science, etc., correct hermeneutics is needed to see what the text actually means. Through the interpretation of the Bible text, it is necessary to find the meaning God wanted to give through the Bible authors. Another important point in this process is to understand the genre of the Bible text. Warfield doesn’t directly use the term ‘genre’, but implies the importance of grasping the genre through concepts such as style, vocabulary, and phenomenon. Finally, Warfield applies the concept of “concursus” in the inspiration of the Bible to understanding science. Just as the divine and human elements of the Bible can be fully understood through the concept of “concursus,” it was considered that God’s supernatural power and natural process of the created world can contribute to God’s purpose and government through the concursive process. Warfield’s position on the relationship between the Bible and evolutionary theory provides an important principle for us to understand the relationship between the Bible and science today. As Mark Noll pointed out, Warfield’s understanding of the Bible and evolution shows that today we can consider a “much more satisfactory working relationship” between theology and science. Through Warfield’s discussion in this paper, I’d like to present the possibility of approaching science with an open attitude while adhering to the Reformed doctrine of the Bible.
