국문 초록

이 논문은 19세기 신칼빈주의 운동의 중추적인 역할을 감당했던 개혁파 교의학자 헤르만 바빙크(Herman Bavicnk, 1854-1921)가 제시하는 ‘교회의 보편성’ 개념을 바르게 이해하고, 그 이해에 기초하여 오늘날 한국교회가 겪고 있는 교회론적인 문제에 대한 해법을 모색한다. 헤르만 바빙크는 1834년 네덜란드에서 일어난 분리(Afscheiding)운동의 중심이 된 가정에서 태어나 평생 동안 그 전통을 지키려고 노력했던 사람이다. 하지만 그는 단지 분리측 사람으로만 머물지 않았고 1887년 일어난 애통(Doleantie)운동 이후에 아브라함 카이퍼(Abraham Kuyper, 1837-1920)와 더불어 교회 연합을 위해 힘썼다. 이처럼 바빙크가 교회 연합에 대한 열망을 가지고 그 최전선에서 분투할 수 있었던 까닭은 바로 기독교의 보편성(우주성)에 기초한 교회의 보편성에 대한 그의 믿음 때문이었다. 이 주제에 관한 그의 이해는 『기독교와 교회의 보편성』과 『개혁교의학』에서 깊이 있게 드러나는데, 본 논문에서는 그가 제시하는 교회의 보편성 개념을 밀도있게 연구하고 그것이 종교개혁자들이 말하는 비가시적 교회 사상을 잘 계승하고 있으며 또한 신칼빈주의에서 주목하는 유기체적 교회 사상과도 적절하게 연결된다고 평가한다. 그리고 결론으로서 교회의 보편성에 관한 바빙크의 이해가 한국 교회에 주는 교훈이 무엇인지를 고찰하는데, 오늘날 한국교회가 겪는 교회론적인 문제의 핵심에 교회의 보편성에 대한 무지가 있다고 판단하고 초대형교회들이 만들어낸 시스템과 프로그램을 무비판적으로 모방하는 획일화를 넘어서 한국 교회가 다양성 속에 있는 통일성(unity in diversity)안에서 참된 교회의 보편성을 추구할 것은 제안한다.

영문 초록

This article studies the concept of ‘the Catholicity of the Church’ presented by Herman Bavicnk(1854-1921), a Reformed dogmatician who played a important role in the Neo-Calvinism movement in the 19th century. Moreover, it examines and finds a solution to the ecclesiological problems facing the Korean Church today. Herman Bavinck was born into a family which became the center of the Afscheiding movement in the Netherlands in 1834, and throughout his life tried to preserve that tradition. However, he did not stay only as a separatist but worked for unity of the Church with Abraham Kuyper(1837-1920) after the Doleantie movement in 1887. The reason Bavinck was able to fight at the forefront with such aspiration for the Church’s unity was because of his belief in the Catholicity of the Church based on the Catholicity(universality) of Christianity. His understanding of this subject is revealed in depth in The Catholicity of the Christianity and the Church and Reformed Dogmatics. This article evaluates that Bavicnk’s concept of the Catholicity of the Church succeeds the Reformers’ invisible church idea very well, and also evaluates that it is properly connected with the Neo-Calvinist s organic form of visible church. And as a conclusion, it examines what lessons Bavinck s understanding of the Catholicity gives to the Korean Church. It suggests that the Korean Church pursue the true Catholicity of the Church in unity in diversity beyond the uniformity caused by uncritical imitating Mega Churches’ systems and programs.
