워필드는 유신진화론을 주장하였는가?

국문 초록

벤자민 워필드는 찰스 핫지와 함께 구프린스턴을 대표하는 신학자이다. 그는 성경의 무오성을 믿으면서도 유신진화론을 수용한 사람으로 인구에 회자되곤 하였다. 이는 그의 저술들을 살펴보면 자연스럽게 도달하는 결론이라고 할 수 있다. 그가 당시의 진화론에 대해 상당 부분 개방적으로 언급하고 있는 것이 사실이기 때문이다. 하지만 현대적 의미에서 유신진화론에서 주장하는 주장들에 대해 워필드가 과연 찬성하였는지에 대해서는 부정적인 답을 하지 않을 수 없다. 그렇다면 워필드는 유신진화론에 어느 정도 여지를 둔 것은 사실이지만 현대적인 의미에서의 유신진화론을 주장하였다고 보기에는 어려움이 있을 것이다. 워필드가 유신진화론을 지지하였다는 주장은 그런 면에서 보면 다소 부주의한 주장이라고 할 수 있을 것이다. 지금 시대의 유신진화론의 가장 중요한 주장 가운데 한 가지는 아담의 역사성을 부정하는 것이라고 할 수 있다. 과연 워필드가 유신진화론을 주장하였는가 하는 문제도 이 문제와 관련하여 살펴보아야 할 것이다. 많은 부분 진화론에 대해 여지를 남겨두는 것 같은 워필드이지만 이담의 역사성과 관련하여 유신진화론의 입장을 취하고 있지는 않음이 분명하다고 할 수 있다. 복음주의 신학이 유신진화론을 수용할 수 없는 가장 중요한 이유도 마찬가지다. 그런 의미에서 아담의 역사성은 유신진화론의 난점이라고 할 수 있다. 워필드는 이 부분과 관련하여 분명하게 복음주의신학의 입장에 서 있음을 확인하게 된다.

영문 초록

Benjamin B. Warfield, along with Charles Hodge, is a theologian representing Old Princeton theology. He used to be talked about by the population as a person who believed in the inerrancy of the Bible and accepted the theory of theistic evolutionism. This can be said to be a natural conclusion when looking at his writings. This is because it is true that he is very open to the theory of evolution at the time. However, in the modern sense, we cannot help but give a negative answer as to whether Warfield really agreed with the arguments asserted in the theory of theistic evolutionism. If so, it is true that Warfield left some room for the theory of theistic evolutionism, but it would be difficult to say that he insisted on theistic evolutionism in a modern sense. In that respect, the claim that Warfield supported the theory of theistic evolutionism can be said to be a careless claim. One of the most important arguments of theistic evolutionism in this era can be said to deny Adam’s historicity. The question whether Warfield insisted on the theory of theistic evolutionism should also be examined in relation to this issue. Warfield seems to leave room for much of evolutionism, but it can be said that it is clear that he did not take the position of theistic evolutionism with respect to this historicity of Adam. The same is true of the most important reason why evangelical theology cannot accept theistic evolutionism. In this sense, Adam’s historicity can be said to be the difficulty in theistic evolutionism. Warfield confirms that he is clearly in the position of evangelical theology in this regard.
