Jeom Pil-Jae, one of the greatest writers and confucianists of the earlier Yi-Dynasty, took deep interest in poetry and mastered the rules of versification and its changes by reading through the Korean and Chinese verses. He was born to Kang-Ho, a practical confucianist, and established not only his family but administration to improve offical discipline based on his poetic talents in the midst of political confusion caused by King Sae-Jo s usurpation. During his government service, he had real aspiration for rural life, and such aspiration is important in this respect that he only tried to be free from outer bondages and to be familiar with nature, instead of leading dissolute and immoral life. In other words, he was very desirous of living to seek after truth and self control, and it can be said that he had such longing for rural life on account of hard and realistic conditions in his government service. In the end his care and concern turned out to be true through the calamity of literate in the year of Mu-O. In general people say that he is well-known to us owing to the funeral oration which resulted in the calamity, but we must not underestimate that he has occupied an important position as an official, the confucian leader of Young Nam School, and a man of letters besides a great scholar of those days. So, I dare say the research on him is necessary for settling various problems such as learning, literature, chronicles, and the calamity of the earlier Yi-Dynasty. He has left behind him about 1,200 poems, and in terms of the form, he largely composed Seven-Word Lines (Seven Syllable Meter). From the standpoint of thematic classification, they can be divided into five groups: 1. Poems of affection for the common people. 2. Those of wish for good government. 3. Those of enthusiasm to be converted to nature. 4. Those of loyalty by living a poetical life. 5. Those of wish to cultivate virtue through learning. His poetical viewpoint had a great influence on the noble mind of classical scholars of Yi-Dynasty. Moreover, he left behind him original poetical-style which can be distinctive from those writers whose prime object was prose. The aim of this research is to appreciate and criticize those samples of the characteristics of the above-mentioned poems.
