국문 초록

이 사례 연구를 통해 유럽 학생들에게 한국의 언어와 문화에 대한 관심의 촉매제로서의 역할을 한 것은 비단 한류 문화와 한류 상품만이 아닌 중국, 일본 등 동북 아시아문화와 언어에 대한 학생들의 기존 경험들과 관심, 그리고 유럽에 진출한 한국기업에의 취업 가능성 등이 또한 중요하게 작용했음을 확인할 수 있었다. 실질적으로 한국 유학을 온 학생들의 최종 결정을 이끌어내는 동기요인은 학생들의 출신국가 및 전공분야에 따라 종류 및 정도가 다양하였다. 이 의사 결정과정에서 가장 중요한 요소는 친구의 추천, 한국에 대한 이국적인 인상과 이미지, 문화적 차이에 대한 학습 욕구, 자국 또는 유럽 내 한국계 회사의 취업 전망 등이 있었다.

영문 초록

Analyzing data from in-depth interviews with European exchange students at a Korean university this study illustrates that students’ motivation to participate in study exchange programs in Korea is not simply caused by the impact of Hallyu. Initial interest of the students in Korea was triggered by Hallyu but also by previous curiosity in China and Japan and by good job prospects with Korean companies in Europe. The final decisions to study in Korea was shaped by several motivational factors whose degree of influence depended on the home country and study major. The most significant motivational factors in the decision-making process were friends’ recommendations, the imagined exoticness and cultural difference of Korea and promising job prospects with Korean employers back home.
