燕巖 朴趾源의 「象房」과 「象記」의 상호텍스트성 연구

국문 초록

본고에서는 박지원의 「상방」 과 「상기」를 상호텍스트성의 관점에서 분석하여 두 작품이 어떻게 연결되어 있는지를 구체적으로 살피고, 두 작품을 통해 박지원이궁극적으로 말하려 했던 바가 무엇인지를 밝히는 데 주된 목적을 두고 논의를 진행하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 「상방」과 「상기」을 다시 분석하여 박지원이 궁극적으로 전달하려 한 메시지와 그것이 함의하는 바가 무엇인지를 밝히고, 그 결과를 토대로 둘 사이의 상관관계를 파악하였다. 나아가 두 작품이 사행문화사에 차지하는 의미를 간략히 정리하여 글의 마무리로 삼았다. 「상방」은 상방에서 직접 견문한 코끼리의 정보에 『일하구문』과 연행록 등 국내외 문헌을 참고하여 코끼리의 실체와 본질을 구체적으로 변증한 텍스트이고, 「상기」는 코끼리를 매개로 사물에 대한 근본적인 인식의 오류가 天과 理의 주재성과 실재성을 지나치게 사변적으로 해석하고 절대화하는 데서 비롯되었다는 비판과 성찰을 담은 텍스트다. 박지원이 두 텍스트를 통해 궁극적으로 말하려 했던 바는 홍대용과 박제가 등 그와 교유했던 북학파 지식인들이 공히 주장했던 바로, 특히 학문적으로는 실학으로 철학적으로는 경험론으로 문화적으로 북학으로 전환을 요구하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 이러한 함의와 가치를 지닌 두 텍스트는 코끼리를 매개로 긴밀하게 연결되어 있는데, 특히 「상방」 은 「상기」 에서 다룬 문제의식의 출발이자 중요한 소재이며 「상기」에서 비판하고 성찰한 내용의 구체적 결과물이자 증거로 기능한다. 이는 「상방」에서 다룬 내용들이 「상기」에 명시적으로 포함되어 있을 뿐 아니라 「상기」에서 다룬 내용이 「상방」에서 그대로 재현되고 있는 데서 확인이 가능하다. 결국 「상방」과 「상기」는 서로가 서로를 증거하는 텍스트임을 알 수 있다. 두 텍스트를 함께 읽어야 하는 이유도 바로 여기에 있다.

영문 초록

This paper analyzed 「Sangbang」 and 「Sanggi」 on view of intertextuality. Therefore this paper tried to reveal how two works concretely related each other and eventually what Park Jiwon intended to say trough two works. Which is this paper’s aim. First, 「Sangbang」 and 「Sanggi」 were analyzed again to disclose messages from Park Jiwon and meanings in the messages. Then, on base of the results this paper grasped interrelation of two works. Furthermore, a brief meaning accounted for Sahaeng(diplomatic journey to China) cultural history of two works became the conclusion in this article. 「Sangbang」 is a text including information about elephants fromPark Jiwon’s experiences in Sangbang(the hutch of elephants located in China) and demonstrations on the substance and essence of elephants with reference to domestic and foreign documents such as 『Ilhwagumun』 and 『Yeonhaengrok』 etc. 「Sanggi」 is a text including criticisms and reflections which fundamental misunderstandings on things mediated as elephants began from the excessively speculative interpretations and absolutization on the subjectivity and reality of Chun(天: heaven) and E(理: rationality). What Park Jiwon tried to speak through two texts was that what intellectuals associated with him of Bukhakpa such as Hong Daeyong and Park Jega did insist together. Which was the changeover to Bukhak, especially in the study, Silhak, philosophy and in the empiricism. Two texts containing these undertones and values were connected each other mediated from elephants, Specially, 「Sangbang」 was the start point and important material of critical mind dealt on 「Sanggi」 and functioned as concrete results and clues of contents criticized and introspected on 「Sanggi」 . Which can be verified that not only the contents dealt in 「Sangbang」 were explicitly included in 「Sanggi」 , but also the contents dealt in 「Sanggi」 were intactly represented in 「Sangbang」 . In conclusion, 「Sangbang」 and 「Sanggi」 were the texts proving each other. The reason to read two texts at the same time is located in here.
