교양교육과 전문교육 개념 구분의 모호성

국문 초록

전통적으로 교양교육은 전문교육과 개념적으로 비교 되었다. 현재까지 교양교육의 개념은 교육의 내재적 가치가 강조되는 교육, 자유교육(liberal education), 일반교육(general education) 등의 용어로 설명되어 왔다. 한편, 전문교육의 개념은 교육의 외재적 가치에 중점을 둔 교육, 직업교육(vocational education), 기술교육(technical education)등의 용어로 사용되기도 한다. 이러한 경향은 피터스(R. S. Peters, 1919- )와 함께 자유교육론을 체계화하여 약 30년 가까이 전 세계 교육학계에 지대한 영향을 미쳐온 허스트(P. H. Hirst, 1927- )가노년에 이르러 이전의 아이디어를 부정하고, 교육은 근본적인 면에서 사회적 실제에 기반을 두어야 한다고 주장하기 이전까지는 긍정된다. 이런 맥락에서 볼 때, 허스트의 주장대로 자유교육 대신에 ‘사회적 실제에 기반을 둔 교육’을 해야 한다면, 그러한 교육은 개념상의 차이뿐만 아니라 교육 전체의 변화를 초래했다고 볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 연구들을 참고로 허스트 전기와 후기의 교육에 관한 주장이 어떤 의미를 가지는지 파악하고, 전통적으로 전문교육과 비교하여 이해할 수 있던 교양교육에 대한 개념이 모호해지는 현실을 정확하게 인식하기 위한 시도이다.

영문 초록

Traditionally, “liberal arts education” was compared with “professional education” in notions. Up to now, a concept of “liberal arts education” has been explained with the education by which the educational immanent value Is put the accent on ; terminology of “liberal education” and “general education”. On the other hand, a concept of “professional education” is also used by the education which put emphasis on the educational external value; terminology of vocational education and technical education. P. H. Hirst systematized liberal education theory as well as R. S. Peters and had a great influence on the whole world for nearly about 30 years. In 1990, he criticized his earlier ideas in which he believed that the goal of education is to enter into other forms of knowledge. Then, he proposed a new idea that education was an entrance into social practices. As a result, an education is going to cause confusion at a part of all as well as a concept. This study is to make the concept of the social practices clear and is the try to recognize the actuality, “professional education” is difficult to divide into which as “liberal arts education” correctly.
