This presentation describes the educational effects of a mentoring program for potentially gifted students from low income families. Many studies have found pros and cons of the effects of mentoring programs for low income students. Some studies show effectiveness of mentoring programs on mentees, by providing positive role models and academic help. However other studies have found that mentoring programs tend to be better at improving students’ non-cognitive skills than their academic performance, and the benefits tend to dissipate quickly. Considering previous studies, the goal of this program is to provide good academic assistances and career advising, support and encourage students over a long period of time, starting from grade 7 until entering colleges. The participants in this study are 189 students, grade 7 to grade 9 who have been referred by their teachers as potentially gifted in mathematics and sciences. Mentors and mentees spend 4 hours per every other weekends over the seven months at 10 specialized science high schools in nationwide to study mathematics and sciences. To find out the educational effects of the mentoring program, the students’ self-esteem and attitudes toward science were examined by pre and post-test. Students showed improvement in self-esteem and attitude toward science with significance. Especially male students showed significant increase in self-esteem. This result suggests that this mentoring program has educational effects on students’ self-esteem and positive attitude toward science. Recommended practices are suggested in discussion.
