국문 초록

머리모양은 시대에 따라 그 사회의 문화현상을 나타내기도 한다. 조선시대에는 머리모양으로 사람의 신분을 구분하기도 하였다. 이 논문은 머리모양의 구분이 사회적 신분을 나타내기도 한 조선시대 가체머리의 상징적 연구 이다. 연구의 체제는 선행논문을 비롯한 고문헌, 고미술 등을 통해 혼인의 상징성, 신분의 상징성, 부의 상징성으로 나누어 검토하였다. 연구의 결과를 분석해보면 조선시대는 가체머리가 주를 이루면서 가체머리로 인한 상징성은 혼인유무, 신분의 차이를 구분하였으며 조선중기에는 병자호란과 임진왜란을 거치 는 동안 신분의 질서가 문란해지면서 ‘부(富)’에 따른 상징적 의미를 나타내기도 하였다. 혼인 여부에 따라서는 처녀의 댕기머리에서 혼례를 올리면서 쪽머리로 바뀌었고, 머리숱에 따라 가체를 덧넣어 쪽을 지었다. 혼례를 올린 후에는 평소 얹은머리 모양을 하고 있었다. 신분에 따라 사대부와 궁에서는 본 두발에 가채를 땋아 얹는 얹은머리 형태인 어여 머리, 거두미, 첩지머리를 하였으며 일반 서민은 본 머리카락에 가체를 덧넣어 땋은 얹은 머리와 쪽머리를 하였으며, 특수 계층인 기녀와 관기는 가체머리를 크고 높게 올렸다. 조선중기에는 가채를 구매할 수 있는 능력이 부에 따라 차이가 있었으므로, 부를 나타내기 위해 성중에서는 가체머리를 크고 높게 올리기 시작하며 사치풍조가 시작되었음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 조선시대의 가체머리는 미적 의식은 물론 신분에 따른 상징적 의미가 많은 부분을 차지하였다고 볼 수 있다.
