서예의 예술적 특성에 대하여

국문 초록

본고는 현재 한국 서예계가 당면하고 있는 위기적 상황을 극복하기 위한 방안을 모색하는 작업의 일환으로 서예의 예술적 특성을 탐색하기 위하여 집필된 것이다. 본고에서는 먼저 현재의 위기상황에 이르게 된 배경에 대한 반성적 성찰을 위하여 20세기 한국 서예사를 간략하게 점검하였다. 이를 통해 20세기 한국 서단은 일부 선각적 서예인들의 노력에도 불구하고 구태의연한 도제식 서예교육, 서예에 대한 학 문적 탐구 미흡 등의 문제점을 지니고 있었음을 알 수 있었다. 그러나 서예인구의 급격한 감소와 작가들의 예술적 창의력 빈곤 등 현재의 위기상황은 전문 서예인들이 서예 학습자들의 학습동기를 정확하게 파악하지 못하고 후진들을 교육하였고, 서 예의 예술적 특성을 심도 있게 이해하지 못했기 때문인 것으로 판단되는데 보다 근본적인 요인은 후자이다. 이러한 문제의식을 바탕으로 본고에서는 서예의 본질과 관련된 채옹(蔡邕), 이택후(李澤厚), 유희재(劉熙載) 등의 담론에 대한 검토를 통하여 서예의 예술적 특성을 탐색하였다. 이들의 담론을 종합하면 ‘글씨는 자연에 근원하였으므로 자연을 본받아 야하며 궁극적으로 자연에 도달하여야한다’는 주장으로 요약된다. 서예의 예술적 특성에 대한 이러한 주장은 ‘글씨는 천리(天理)에 근원한 것이니 천리를 깨닫고 거기에 도달하기 위해 부단히 노력해야하며 궁극적으로 천리를 표현하여야한다’는 뜻을 내포하고 있다. 『중용(中庸)』에 의하면 ‘천리(天理)’의 핵심은 바로 ‘진실함[誠]’인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 따라서 서예가가 서예를 통해 구현하여야할 구극적 경지는 ‘성(誠)’이고, ‘성(誠)’에 도달하기 위한 과정인 ‘성지(誠之)’는 예술적 수련과 인격적 자아완성의 여 정이기도 하다. 이러한 관점에서 보면 서예는 ‘성(誠)’에 도달하는 것을 이상으로 한다는 점에서 ‘진(眞)’, 천연의 아름다움을 추구한다는 점에서 ‘미(美)’, ‘성(誠)’에 이르러가는 과정 그 자체가 심성 수양의 여정이라는 점에서 ‘선(善)’을 추구하는 예술 이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to research the artistic characteristics of calligraphy as a part of work to seek for measures to overcome the critical situation that the Korean calligraphy world is facing now. For the reflective introspection of the background of the current critical situation, first, this paper briefly reviewed the 20th-century calligraphic history of Korea. In spite of some pioneering calligraphers efforts, the 20th-century calligraphy world of Korea had problems like old-fashioned apprenticeship calligraphic education, and insufficient academic researches on calligraphy. However, the current critical situation like the rapid decrease of calligraphic population and artists lack of artistic creativity has been originated from the fact that professional calligraphers trained the next generation without accurately understanding learners motivation, and also that they could not deeply understand the artistic characteristics of calligraphy. Actually, the latter is more fundamental factor. Based on the critical mind above, this paper researched the artistic characteristics of calligraphy through the review of discourses like Cai Yong, Li Ze-Hou, and Liu Hsi-Tsai, related to the essence of calligraphy. Putting together their discourses, they could be summarized that letters are originated from nature, so that they should take after nature to eventually reach it’. This opinion about the artistic characteristics of calligraphy contains the meaning that ‘letters are originated from the law of nature, so that we should work hard to realize the law of nature and to reach it, and eventually we should express the law of nature’. According to『Zhong yong(Doctrine of Mean)』, the core of ‘the law of nature’ is ‘sincerity’. Therefore, the ultimate state that calligraphers should realize through calligraphy is ‘sincerity’, and the process to reach the sincerity could be a journey of artistic training and personal self-completion. In this aspect, calligraphy is an art pursuing truth as it aims for reaching sincerity , pursuing beauty as it pursues the natural beauty, and also pursuing goodness as the process itself to reach sincerity is a journey to mind cultivation
